DT Tommy Schutt (Official Thread)

Free Rivals - Top players tell others: Don't rush your decision

Glen Ellyn (Ill.) Glenbard West defensive tackle Tommy Schutt, the No. 64 player in the Rivals100, committed to Notre Dame, Penn State, and Ohio State during his process. He wishes now he had only made one commitment.

Schutt said many factors played a role in his multiple changes of heart. Perhaps the biggest: He did not make the choice for himself.

He hopes future players won't make the same mistake he did.

"Don't take other people's word for it," he said. "There are things some people will think are great about a school or a campus that you won't and the other way around. You may have interests that they don't. You need to find out for yourself."

Schutt took an official to Ohio State in December after Urban Meyer joined the staff and committed to the Big Ten school.

"I was really glad I took the visit (to Ohio State)," he said. "It made a huge difference."

Glenbard West's Schutt happy to be back to where he started with Ohio State
By Mike Helfgot Special to the Tribune
January 31, 2012

Urban Meyer was retired, Joe Paterno's dismissal was unthinkable and Jim Tressel sat at an Ohio State basketball game with a promising high school junior who was thinking about becoming a Buckeye.

It was January 2011. Glenbard West defensive tackle Tommy Schutt was enjoying life as one of the top-ranked recruits in the nation.

"Ohio State was the No. 1 school on my list after my junior year," Schutt said. "I loved it out there. Then everything happened and Coach Tressel was no longer there."
