DT Tommy Schutt (Official Thread)

I don't think Schutt is going to a a Big hank type player. Maybe Washington will be that guy. Certainly, Schutt will get a lot of playing time because he's physically ready and an "effort" guy.

And I worry about replacing Simon and Williams more. We only had 30 sacks last year with them.

True you can't replace Hank. Simon and Williams were both less than 100% too.

Schutt IMO is an upgrade from the great tradition of had 1 techs we had over the past ( Anderson,Worthington,Larrimore,Denlinger, Goebel) which is a sign of our overall team talent getting better

I will be immensely shocked if this kid isn't in the same conversation as Hankins by the time he leaves... what he may lack physically to Hankins, he more than makes up for it with effort and energy.... if Hankins had this motor, he'd be top 5 pick

UFM has gone on the record quite a few times saying he thinks Schutt will be a great player here. I don't know if I have even heard him mention Hale. I think both guys will play but Schutt starts. Tommy is more than an "effort guy" though, he has plenty of natural ability and talent. His stature doesn't scream that but he really is a talent and with another season here to redistribute his weight and work on his conditioning, I have no doubt he can be a very good player for us inside this year.

Former Glenbard West star poised for bigger role after solid debut season at Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? After a dominant career at Glenbard West High School, Tommy Schutt is set to enter his second season with the Ohio State University football team.

Schutt originally had committed to Penn State University before the Jerry Sandusky scandal was exposed. Schutt later changed his commitment to Ohio State and was an immediate contributor as a freshman for the Buckeyes, seeing action in 10 games.

This fall, with the team not returning any starters on the defensive line, an increased role is likely for Schutt.

What have you been up to this summer?

I?ve been on campus working out and lifting and taking a few classes. We are getting ready for camp, which starts next week.

What was your first season like?

It was a great experience personally and for our team. I had the chance to learn from some really good players, guys who went on to the NFL. I learned valuable things from them, and I feel more prepared for the upcoming year because of my experiences from last year.

What is the biggest difference going up against college offensive linemen?

The speed of the game. Everything is a step quicker. Everybody you are going against is as good if not better than you are. The overall competition is pretty challenging.

What adjustments did you have to make as a player?

Again, the speed of the game. You go from the biggest and strongest guy in high school to being at the bottom of the food chain, having to compete for reps and playing time. That is a lot different than what you are used to in high school.

Does a highlight stand out from your first year?

Definitely beating the team up north [Michigan]. That was a really cool experience for my first year.

Damn.....Get well soon Tommy!! Next man up.

Unfortunately, depth at DT was pretty thin before this injury. With Munger out for the season already and Price at G (although he could possibly move back), the next man up options are relatively thin.

You've got Hale and Bennett as the starters.

Chris Carter has made some noise during camp, but conditioning and consistent effort will be concerns until he can prove otherwise on the field.

Michael Hill has gotten good reviews as well but comes with the typical true freshman concerns.

After that... ?

Adolphus Washington and/or Joey Bosa sliding down?

Price moving back from O?

Is Sprinkle ready to play? on the interior?

Can Chris Rock contribute?

There are options, but defending the middle against power rush teams was my biggest concern heading into this season (especially with an inexperienced unproven MLB, whoever that ends up being) and this obviously doesn't help at all.

Not good...agreed 100% with 86 and will just also add that health has always been an issue with Bennett as well, which makes this even more concerning. Bosa and Hill are going to need to step it up in a big way (I would assume Bosa is going to slide down on occasion). Also think Diesel is a strong candidate to slide down if need be, he really played some good ball at DT as a frosh last year. And of course this gives Carter his big opportunity...it is now or never, hopefully he answers the bell and runs with it.

I wish Tommy a speedy recovery...he was going to be a really big factor for us at DT and now we're going to have to wait until late in the season for him.

If the above are the only options, at a position we are thin at, this team is stacked.

Also wishing Tommy a full and speedy recovery
