On the evening news tonight, NBC5 in Chicago reported on Schutt changing his verbal - they did this as a follow-up to their coverage of Sandusky's legal issues today - and it was in the first 10 minutes, in the regular news portion of the broadcast, not the sports segment.
Michelle Relerford - "The T-Shirt Tommy Schutt wears today (Note: white with red letters saying Ohio State), the result of weeks of debate. After talking with his parents, and watching closely how events at Penn State have unfolded, Schutt has decided his future is no longer in State College, Pennsylvania."
TS - "I really enjoyed my visit there, and just the stuff going on, I kind of had to move away from it."
MR - "The 301-pound defensive tackle is ranked 5th in the nation - he made the cover of ESPN the Magazine's high school football edition this year. Schutt was recruited by Joe Paterno to play football for the Penn State program."
TS - "He's an unbelievable guy, he's a legend of the game, and I was actually fortunate enough to go over to his house for breakfast on my visit, and that was a pretty cool experience."
MR - "Schutt says it was in early August, just after his visit to the Penn State campus, when he comitted to playing football there. The landscape has dramatically changed since then. Paterno, head coach for 46 years was fired after the arrest of Jerry Sandusky, one of his long-time assistant coaches, on child sex abuse charges. Schutt does not want to discuss the allegations that have marred the program, but he admits they weighed heavily on his mind."
TS - "It's been a little bit stressful, but I've just been trying to stay out of it a little bit, and kind of let things go, and see how they play out, and move on from there."
MR - "And move on he has - after a phone call from Urban Meyer, head coach at Ohio State" (Note - picture of UFM at his introductory tOSU presser shown).
TS -"Well, I visited Ohio State this past weekend, and I had a great visit, and really got a great feel for the environment, and all the people there, and came away with a great experience."
MR - "Schutt says he feels confident in his decision."
TS - "Penn State was a school that I was very fond of as a kid, but now, after all this, I'm very excited about Ohio State."
MR - "And Schutt says the Penn State coaches did not try to change his mind. They told him that they understood his decision, and wished him the best of luck. He leaves for Columbus, Ohio in June."
