University of Cincinnati football coach Luke Fickell was named National Coach of the Year on Tuesday.
Fickell's win was announced by the UC athletic department in a press release.
UC became the first Group of Five conference team to make the College Football Playoff, finishing fourth in the final rankings by the College Football Playoff Committee. The Bearcats play No. 1 Alabama on Dec. 31 at the Cotton Bowl in the CFP Semifinal.
Fickell is the second UC coach to win National Coach of the Year after former coach Brian Kelly won the award in 2009.

As other coaches left, Luke Fickell stayed at Cincinnati to continue to build
"The decisions we make obviously make us, and we all have to make our own decisions for whatever's best for whatever it is we believe is the right thing," Fickell said. "To be in the place where we are, obviously to have the year that we've had and to have the opportunity we have, but to be able to spend it with those guys I think is that much more special."

Kirk Herbstreit weighs in on why Cincinnati's Luke Fickell did not go to USC, LSU, Notre Dame or Oklahoma
“In Luke Fickell’s case, he was so locked in on what his team was trying to do,” Herbstreit said on the Dan Patrick Show. “I think ultimately he could have had his choices of USC, of LSU, of Notre Dame, potentially Oklahoma. And he was so focused on what his team was doing, he was letting (agent) Jimmy Sexton know, ‘Listen, man, I don't want to go there.’ Well, you're gonna miss out on this job. OK. In today's day and age, you got to really respect (what he did). I mean, he was the front runner for every one of those jobs and he just wanted to finish the race. So it cost him all these jobs because of the timing.”
