AREA HIGH SCHOOL COACHES BELIEVE LUKE FICKELL WILL FIND SUCCESS AT CINCINNATI
CINCINNATI — Steve Specht, the three-time state-championship winning head coach at St. Xavier High School, doesn’t need fingers or toes to count how many times Tommy Tuberville, the former head coach at the University of Cincinnati, visited his office over Tuberville’s four-year tenure as the leader of the Bearcats’ program.
The answer is a nice, round number.
“I can tell you exactly how many times [Tuberville] was in my office and that was zero,” Specht recently told Eleven Warriors. “He was never in my office, and that spoke volumes about what, in my opinion, UC lacked.”
It’s rather stunning Tuberville never visited St. Xavier, one of the top high school programs in the country that is located fewer than 10 miles from Cincinnati’s campus. But Specht was hardly the only area prep coach to tell Eleven Warriors he never received a visit from the former Bearcats’ head man. And that’s precisely why many of Cincinnati’s high school coaches feel the area’s college program struggled at the end of the Tuberville era.
That changed a bit after Luke Fickell was announced as the Bearcats’ head coach Dec. 10, 2016. Fickell is getting back to what Cincinnati was founded on — recruiting the Queen City itself — and it’s being noticed.
“You look back to the Mark Dantonio days to Brian Kelly and Butch Jones, they owned the city,” Specht said. “They pushed hard and they took fliers on some kids just to keep them local and the results spoke for themselves. I think that’s what Luke is starting to do again.”
Added Larry Cox, the head coach at West Chester Lakota West: “He’ll do a great job. Luke knows what’s important in this state and more specifically, he knows what’s important in Southwest Ohio. He’s got people around him, as well, that are going to help. Luke is just so damn smart.”
Cincinnati currently has six verbal commitments in its 2018 recruiting class. All six are from the state of Ohio and four of the six are from the Cincinnati area. There’s a noticeable emphasis on recruiting one of the country’s top areas for prep talent.

Very happy for Fickell, and I agree that his strategy can bring UC back to winning and being competitive. I'm not saying they'll ever be OSU, but at least it was fun when Kelly was here, as there was a certain type of excitement in the town when UC was winning and made it look fun with local kids who on Friday's were playing within the 275 perimeter. I'd never see myself changing allegiance, but I definitely see myself bringing the family to a game or 2 at Nippert. Fickell has the town buzzing again, and what he's doing made it so frustrating watching Tuberville coach, because he resided in a hot bed for HS football talent and completely ignored it. On a sidenote: I hope UC fans, alum, admin understand that they're still a stepping stone, and have finally come to grips with it... Because they can have extended success with up and coming coaches looking to make names for themselves. And the program has homegrown talent in almost a cake conference in which the right coach can step in, continue recruiting Cincinnati and continue success...

I don't really like the Bearcraps; however, I will be rooting for them on September 9, 2017.
With that being said, you would think Luke could do pretty well recruiting in Kentucky and Indiana too due to the close proximity to those states and the fact that major competition would be IU, Purdue, Louisville, and UK who are pretty much "basketball schools" in "basketball states". I guess though the main thing going against Cincinnati there might be that they aren't a "Power 5 conference" school and those other 4 are.

TBH, IN and KY as states probably don't have the amount of talent as the city of Cincinnati when it comes down to it. IN and KY annually send their best parochial schools to Cincy to play the best Parochial schools here, and get absolutely demolished every time, and these are state champs from IN and KY. I remembered being in Indy when Terry McLaurin was at Cathedral and watching them destroy Indy schools, and then go to Cincy and get their lunch handed to them by Moeller and lose to St. Xavier
I'm sure UC could get a few from those states, but honestly Fickell can recruit Dayton, Cincinnati and some of the small towns around and gobble up the 2-3stars that OSU doesn't go after and win or be in the top 2-3 in the AAC as long as he's there.

The talent in the GCL and GMC alone provides the core talent for many MAC and lower level B1G teams. Just in recent memory Lakota West has two young NFL players that went to Alabama and Texas. Indiana's best player (Tegray Scales) is from Colerain. Dillon Wiseman (who was going to UC before Butchie left) started two years at Tennessee. Jalin Marshall from Middletown...
My point is that as a UC alumnus, I know the football program is a stepping stone and I'm fine with that because there is enough talent in the recruiting base to be 8-4 or 9-3 every year and that's respectable. When the next shift and expansion of the power 5 happens I think the school is well positioned to be included. Still will be a stepping stone job but with a better bowl tie in.

I will go another step further H&G. Under Luke Fickell, Cincy is poised to become a national powerhouse. Far-fetched? Not at all. Ohio State used to be a national powerhouse merely by filling up at least half of its roster with Ohio-born players. Under Urban Meyer, everyone outside the top five players or so in the state is put on the back-burner. It is what it is. If Luke can build up UC as the place for Ohio guys to go who don't get a scholly from the Bucks (as opposed to TSUN, Sparty, or ND), then top-25 rankings are a shoe-in. It's an uphill battle, but I think it's actually always been doable down in Clifton with the right coach. The idiots down there finally hired the right coach.

Just sayin':; He might be able to go after some 4 star guys too. He needs to keep recruiting guys like Faucheux and Peters hard in case Ohio State passes on them and they want to stay in state and/or close to home, etc.

One such prospect in the 2019 class who has yet to receive an offer from Ohio State but is racking them up from other big-time programs is four-star defensive end Steven Faucheux. A 6-foot-5, 272-pounder, Faucheux already has a reported 14 scholarship offers from the likes of Alabama, Florida, Penn State, Tennessee, Cincinnati and more.

There is a ton of time between now and National Signing Day in 2019, so it's impossible to predict how Faucheux's recruitment plays out from here. However, as it always is with in-state prospects, the Buckeyes are a team to watch. If Ohio State wants Faucheux, it will ramp up its pursuit of the talented sophomore.
“He’s technique-sound, but he plays with such tenacity," Cox said of Faucheux. "He refuses to lose. He’s smart and can make adjustments on the run."
"He’s just really, really good.”
Faucheux is a high school teammate of Xavier Peters, a four-star linebacker in the 2018 class who is also receiving national attention. Like Faucheux, Peters is yet to receive an offer from the in-state Buckeyes, but his recruitment is blowing up a bit on a national level and Ohio State may extend one soon.

Faucheux wouldn't be included in the small town 2-3stars kids that I was eluding to. He'd be one of the local Cincy kids that is a no brainer that Fickell will pursue. Faucheux would be a big local win for Fickell(just like getting Wylie and White from LaSalle and Malik Van from Fairfield)Just sayin':; He might be able to go after some 4 star guys too. Fickell at UC won't affect OSU that much, as he will be a major thorn in the side of MSU, UK and Louisville

I don't think he will affect OSU but he is certainly going to benefit some some from OSU going more national. Especially this year
Hawkins looks like a Cincy lock and they have a good chance at Oats

Yes it is. Unless by "national powerhouse" you mean a program that does well in the AAC and has a great year every once in a while like Houston did in Herman's first year. They will never rise to the level of the blue bloods longer than a year or two, unless the midwest powers all take a nosedive at the same time (unlikely).
You say that as if it's a given. Even when ND and scUM suck, which is always, they recruit well and don't lose out to group of 5 schools very often. Even the other B1G schools are finally starting to improve their recruiting. This isn't the 2007 B1G when Tressel and Ron Zook were the only coaches who could be bothered to recruit. Fickell will have to fend off plenty of other more proven HC's from more established power 5 programs.
I get that you're a fan of Cincinnati and optimistic, but I think you're setting the bar too high. Luke will improve recruiting, but he still has to prove a) he is a quality HC b) he can hire quality assistants. I like Luke and expect at least moderate success, but I don't think he's the second coming of Howard Schnellenberger and "Da U".

"National powerhouse" = team ranked in the top 20 multiple years in a row. Not blue-blooded, no. But, as long as Urbs has Ohio State picking and choosing the best from Ohio only, there will be lots of trickle-down for Fickell to snare. He's already doing it. You get a Trubisky to go to UC instead of Carolina, you get a Odenigbo to go instead of Northwestern, you get a Kareem Hunt to head down there instead of Toledo, etc....it starts to add up. That's what Luke is doing by taking guys away from MSU, UK, Purdue, and Pitt. In Tressel years, guys like Vann, Whyle, (Hawkins and Oats), and some of the guys who are going to end up Bearcats would be pursued hard by the Bucks.
I'm not a Cincy fanboy, just stating the obvious...there's always been a big opportunity at UC, and Fickell is exploiting it.
