DT Luke Fickell (HC Wisconsin Badgers)

I have been disappointed in Fickell's play calling but I think his recruiting (especially in Ohio) and commitment to the program are factors that give him a ton of extra job security.

I have no doubt Meyer can find a DC who calls a better game; I think it will be next to impossible to find a DC who has the recruiting connections, Ohio roots and commitment to the program that Fickell has.

A year ago, the D was floundering and magically, a leader was brought in to stabilize the middle.. ONE player...
and all was good with the world... wasn't a change in DC.. it was the interjection of an on-field leader... coincidence ... not
I think this might be overstating things a bit. Last year we went from a bad defense to a mediocre defense with Boren moving. I wouldn't say they were good by out standards.

One thing I wasn't a huge fan of (and I was at the game, so can't say 100% if this is accurate), but we didn't appear to blitz much. All I've seen from DG is that he blows when under pressure. I would have blitzed 40-60% of The Game. Whether that's withers, fickell, or both, wasn't a fan of the play calling.

You can include me in the category that wanted us to bring one more guy than they could block on every play. I might not have cared if that number reached 11 at one point. Sometimes I feel like "fear" is calling the defensive plays. I mean we seem to be so much better when we are attacking...and then "fear" decides we better play it safe.
I think we need to fire "fear".

Was it me, or was there a lack of rotation along the D-line? I haven't watched the game a 2nd time to pay more attention to this, but I'm wondering if our guys started to get fatigued in the 4 quarter due to a lack of rotation. If this is indeed the case, is it a reflection of Vrabel's NFL influence where only the best four play and there is less substituting along with the line?

the TD in the right corner on Barnett was a result of a corner blitz by Roby...that is one blitz that didnt work out so well that I remember

Nothing was working.

Rushing 4- no pressure
Blitzing 1- no pressure
Blitzing 2- no pressure
Rushing 3- no pressure (the worst of the options, by far)

Fact is, Michigan's OLine blocked and protected like All-Pros. Safety play was it's usual lackluster self. To me it's a combo of 1) tipping the hat to Michigan playing like they hadn't played all year at their biggest moment and 2) Back end of the defense up the middle (safeties, some youthful LB play), simply not being good enough.

I'm not going to say anything bad about Luke but I think a change is needed at the DC position. They get shredded with ease by anyone with O talent. If the Buckeyes are to compete against the big boys, the D must be FAR better.

We'll know if Meyer thinks the same in the next couple weeks. If Luke jumps to be a HC at a non-BCS school I think Meyer will be behind it.
