DT Luke Fickell (HC Wisconsin Badgers)

When you're afraid you CBs and safeties are not getting the job done.. takes more than balls to call for continued blitz
Plus I'm sure the coaches were expecting Gardner to self destruct.. somewhere,, at least once.. especially late

We all know he self destructs under pressure, not when he's given all day.
He was on the verge there when we took the lead, but we took the pressure off and let him get comfortable again

Generally speaking Gardner folds under pressure. Problem was, there were a lot of blitzes that didn't get there, and some that did get there didn't finish the play by bringing him to the ground.

M*ch*g*n did a good job punishing Ohio State's aggressiveness and overpursit. When Ohio State brought pressure, I'd say they hurt the Buckeyes more than the Buckeyes hurt them.

I was shocked by the lack of pass rush from the defensive line. In quarters one, two and four they were fairly anonymous. When the other team is punishing you with screens and misdirections and when the secondary has as much trouble in coverage as they had, you need to be able to count on the d-line to wreak havoc so the back seven can stay home and (try to) cover and tackle.

He might be a good position coach, but from what I've seen from 2011 on, he is anything but a good coach as a coordinator/HC. Two completely different skill sets between position coach and head coach/coordinator. I think Fickell's future is as a D-line or LB coach and that should pretty much be his ceiling. I also think that he is OK with that.

 He's 40 hard to really say what his ceiling. He's an OK LBer coach? You went full retard bro, never go full retard.

You kind of went full retard with your response, no? I mean it's not like a freshman who struggles who can/will progress throughout their career. In coaching you usually have it or you don't. You can improve, but it's less likely.

It's no secret that we have a rock star offensive staff and a rock star defensive line coach. Look at the problems with our team over the last few years and it's no coincidence it links with our most underwhelming hires. I was concerned about Coombs and withers when their hires were announced. Fickle as said has a ceiling and I too feel it's as a position coach and helping as a co defensive coordinator.

I'm not sure who is a coaching rising star on defense but the hiring of Coombs and withers really underwhelmed me and so has their production so far.

Personally I'd love to see Coombs be strictly special teams, whithers go, and fickle either stay and help a coordinator with experience or move on as well

I love fick and what he did for our program two years ago but this defense needs coach in charge with the presence like a bud foster from Virginia tech. A guy who believes in pressure and coming from multiple angles. Not a system that gives space and time to teams who otherwise are put in their place

Yet Roby, Barnett, D. Grant are far from bad players and Gardner threw for 451

I'll say this our DBS have talent and in the coming years we will be better because I feel the talent is different with taller and bigger players in the secondary. The linebackers though oh geez are we bad. I can't wait until we can see what Mitchell brings and hopefully Raekwon also because it's the only position group that still needs a depth upgrade

I agree with this. I LOVE Kerry Coombs for his passion and his enthusiasm. But the secondary has been largely a disaster for two years. Whithers I've been "meh" with. But there are issues that need to be addressed. Some of it is talent. But the coaching is clearly an issue as well.

Full retard was a reference to the comment about being an OK lber coach. And you can certainly get much better as a coach as you get experience. A lot of coaches at any level find ways to be better. Some through reinvention, some through learning from the past.

There are plenty of examples but I'll just point out Pete Carroll and Ed Oregron. Carroll reinvented himself because the best coach in the country.Coach O is clearly better now then he was at Ole Miss.

I'm not saying this is gonna happen with Fick, but to say coach can't get progressively better is just stupid.

I've wondered occasionally why Coombs has been exempted from criticsim this year.
