The recruitment of Southeastern High defensive tackle Johnathon Hankins has continued to gain steam since the start of his senior football season. The 6-3, 300-pound Hankins has added two offers from high profile programs in the last couple weeks and is in the midst of taking official visits.
This past weekend, Hankins took an official visit to the University of Florida, a school that offered him a scholarship in November. It was Hankins? second official visit of the process, after a Nov. 14 trip to Virginia. The visit successfully earned the Gators a spot atop his list of favorites.
Virginia had previously held the top spot for Hankins, but its firing of head coach Al Groh has contributed to the Cavaliers? descent. In their place has stepped Michigan after the Wolverines extended an offer to Hankins on Sunday, shortly after he returned home from Gainesville. Ohio State is also a strong contender and an official visit there has been set up for the weekend of Dec. 12.
The offer from Michigan comes on the heels of its staff?s in-person evaluation of him during Southeastern?s playoff game against Cass Tech in November. The Michigan staff followed up its offer with an in-school visit to Southeastern High on Monday afternoon.
Hankins grew up following Michigan and had a strong interest in Ann Arbor as a potential place to play football early in the process. Now that the Wolverines have offered a scholarship, Hankins plans to give them a strong look and will set an official visit to Ann Arbor likely for a date this month.
Hankins had worked out for the Michigan staff at their summer camp in June, but an ankle injury prevented him from performing at 100-percent capacity. His senior season performance as a two-way player - which included 84 tackles, 21 tackles for loss and nine sacks on the defensive side of the football - erased several programs? concerns about his conditioning and stamina.
