Recruiting

DT becomes a priority for MSU

In-state target:
The state of Michigan has two defensive tackles that are considered high-level recruits: Johnathon Hankins of Detroit Southeastern and Carl Davis of Sterling Heights Stevenson. Davis had an offer from Michigan State, but the 6-foot-5, 300-pound prospect decided to end his recruitment earlier this week by committing to Iowa. Davis officially visited the Hawkeyes for their victory over the Wolverines.

Hankins is a 6-foot-3, 326-pound prospect that helps clog the middle for the undefeated Southeastern Jungaleers. Hankins has some impressive scholarship offers, including Ohio State and Oklahoma; however neither the Spartans nor Wolverines have pulled the trigger on an offer. It may be a situation where the in-state teams are looking for smaller, quicker type tackles. The latest reports indicate that Hankins has slimmed down some since this past spring, which is allowing him to play quicker.

Meanwhile, tackle Johnathon Hankins (6-3, 300) anchors a strong defensive line for Southeastern.

"They're big everywhere, a lot bigger than we are," Tim Hardin said. "They have tall players that are big and strong, a lot of great athletes. The same 11 guys go both ways. Their DBs (defensive backs) are 6-3, 6-4. We'll have to overcome our size disadvantage."

Detroit (Mich.) Southeastern defensive tackle Johnathon Hankins has been on the Ohio State recruiting radar screen for some time. Hankins is still high on the Buckeyes, but is starting to get some serious interest from at least one other major program.

Sean Scherer of SpartanTailgate.com had a chance to catch up with Hankins recently and asked him about the Buckeyes and his recruiting status in general. Click here to view Hankins's comments on recruiting.
