DT Joel Hale (Official Thread)

The rarest thing in all of recruiting (in my opinion) is the guy who has what it takes to be a truly dominant DT. When you find that, you don't play him anywhere else. Dominant tackles are just too rare and too valuable to squander at another position. Yes, OT and other positions are awfully valuable... But not compared to the value (and rarity) of a truly dominant 2-gap DT.

High three-star defensive tackle Joel Hale (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) committed to Ohio State Monday, ESPN's Bill Kurelic reports.

"It came down to Florida, Ohio State and Penn State," Hale said. "It was pretty difficult, but I wanted to stay close to home."

Hale had an impressive list of 17 scholarship offers. In addition to the Buckeyes, Gators and Nittany Lions, his list included Indiana, Michigan State, Michigan, Wisconsin, Purdue, Illinois, Cincinnati, Boston College, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Iowa State, Kentucky, Duke and Toledo.

ESPN's Craig Haubert said of the news, "Ohio State stays hot on the recruiting trail getting another good verbal commitment in less then a week's time, this time though from a defensive prospect."

"Hale is a kid with good size and should be able to play comfortably at or over the three houndred pound mark in college. He is a kid with a good motor who moves well for his size. He has the tools to play the run tough and with some development could also be a kid who can create pressure from the interior of the line."

Happy birthday Joel Hale

Joel Hale, Ohio State's latest commitment to its burgeoning recruiting class of 2011, turned 18 today. The defensive line prospect from Center Grove High School outside Greenwood, Ind., celebrated early on Monday, though, telling the OSU coaching staff he wanted to join the Buckeyes.

"I felt like it was time to do it, and it's going to save me a lot of time, money and everything, so I decided to go ahead," Hale said.

He picked Ohio State over Florida, the second commitment to the OSU class in less than a week to make that claim. Quarterback Braxton Miller of Huber Heights (Wayne), Ohio, said the Gators finsihed No.2 with him when he announced his choice last Thursday.

The 6-foot-4, 290-pound Hale saw his stock skyrocket in the last few months. Perhaps it's because of the versatility he presents, being big enough to play inside at at tackle spot while also showing the quickness to play on the end.

Happy birthday Joel Hale (Blogging the Buckeyes)
