DT Joel Hale (Official Thread)

States of recruiting: Indiana - ESPN

Remember this name
Joel Hale
(Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove)
With the strength of this class being in the trenches, it seems only appropriate to keep an eye on a promising big man from the state. Hale, an Ohio State commit, is not someone you would say flew under the radar (he had a healthy amount of scholarship offers to chose from), but he is somewhat of a hidden gem and has the tools to develop into a good defensive tackle in Columbus. Hale, 6-4, 290 pounds, has good size and should be able to add more bulk and comfortably play at around 300 pounds. He plays with a good motor and can move well. He is tough versus the run and with some development could also be a disruptive interior pass rusher. Hale combines good size and ability and should develop into a very productive member of the Buckeyes' defensive line. Ohio State has only signed two other prospects from the Hoosier state since 2006 they have gotten a pretty good third one from here in Hale.

I don't think so...I think there is a better chance they move Tommy Brown or Chase Farris.

I think Brown is a given, I don't know about Farris.

Hale probably has the feet to play tackle which is the same thing I thought about Bellamy coming out of high school. I was kinda hoping the staff would have started Bellamy and or Goebel out at O-line to see how they do ...but I'm sure the D-line depth chart was a large consideration of the staff at the time.

Jeers are few for OSU prospect from Indiana

Joel Hale has taken a little ribbing this week about his college choice, though the emphasis is on the word little.

He has grown up in Indiana and is a senior at Center Grove High School west of Greenwood, a southern suburb of Indianapolis. He can drive from his home to Indiana University in 50 minutes.

Yet IU was never really in his neighborhood as the coveted defensive lineman pondered his list of potential colleges earlier this year. He was being wooed by Ohio State, Florida, Georgia Tech, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Michigan and many others before he committed to the Buckeyes on June 7.

With Ohio State playing host to Indiana at noon today, Hale surely must have been teased about turning his back on his home-state school.

"Maybe some, maybe a little, but really, not much at all," Hale said. "I mean, I am secure in my decision, so I'm not really taking anything from anybody."

"People know how I feel about Indiana, and that I respect the coaching staff and everybody," Hale said. "But I think people do understand why I picked Ohio State. They know I want the best for myself, and my family wants the best for me, too."

Senior defensive lineman Dexter Larimore said much the same when he committed to the Buckeyes four years ago as a highly sought recruit out of Merrillville, Ind. Ditto for four-star running back prospect Rod Smith, an OSU freshman from Fort Wayne.

Hale said he never had favorite schools or teams as a kid.

"I've always been more a fan of the sport than of a team," he said.

So when recruiting attention from upper-echelon programs started picking up a year ago, he took it all in with an open mind.

"That's why my decision was so hard, because if I would have had that dream school to start off with, then it would have been an easy decision," Hale said.
Hale said he thinks the Hoosiers are heading in the right direction under Lynch.

"I think they definitely are coming up, and their program is getting better each year," Hale said. "I think towards my senior season in college and maybe even before that, they are going to be a tough program to compete with."

Are we recruiting other Central Grove kids or were they there with Joel as "friends" ? Not sure how many tickets a recruit generally get for games.

whether they are interested in those kids or not, it doesn't hurt to establish a good relationship with a high school and its coach, there might be someone down the line that Ohio State is interested in, so why not be generous with the sideline passes?

They are probably just his friends, rather than OSU recruits. That said, the kid on the right side of the photo (Jimmy Daggett) could be a walk-on RB prospect, I suppose, but he's not an OSU-caliber scholarship guy at this point. Same goes with the guy in the middle (Brian Jensen), who could be a walk-on LB, potentially. According to Rivals, Daggett has an "offer" from Dartmouth, though, so the kid can definitely play.

Daggett being the leader yardage in the Indiana MIC conference definitely makes him a great player. He and Jansen both seem to be one of those kids that happen to get over looked by the major college programs. Jansen and Daggett both made the all conference team. and Jansen led the conference in tackles. Both of these players are a force to be reckoned with on and off of the field. They are also all academic conference,
