DT Joel Hale (Official Thread)

I've always respected Joel a great deal but this makes me wonder two things. First, what does this do to our already existing numbers crunch in the '15 class? Second, will he move back to DT to provide some depth in the rotation? To me, I still do not understand the move even for last season, as we had depth in the interior with Farris and the others...and as for next season, Knox is going to be ready for minutes and will at the very least provide depth, along with J. Jones. Even Trout may be ready. The OL depth looks like this to me (I know there are duplicate names, but guys can play multiple spots...just putting those that I think will be ready to play):

LT: Decker, J. Jones
G: Price, Knox
C: Boren, Price, Mirkovich(?)
G: Elflein, Farris
RT: Lisle/J. Jones/Farris

That is essentially at the very least 8 guys who I have a lot of confidence in...in the interior alone is Price, Boren, Elflein, Knox, Farris, and J. Jones plays there some too. Throw in that we have 5-6 OL coming in and I just don't see why we would not move him back to DT when looking at the depth there after we lose Bennett and Carter:

DT: Schutt, Hill, Sprinkle(?)
DT: Washington, Munger, Cornell(?)

I just think with the OL solidified in both talent and experience, we need him more on the DL. Hill and Munger played sparingly this year and while I still have faith they will come along, I think this position is much more uncertain than the OL...plus we actually could utilize his fresh legs in the rotation, whereas we likely would not on the OL. Just my 2 cents.

He'll be moved back to DT.

With 6 new O-Linemen added today, glad to know we'll have Hale coming back over to play DT. With him, Washington, Munger, Hill, & Schutt, you've got to feel good about out depth heading into the spring.

Joel Hale: A Coach in Waiting

JoelHale.jpg

At one point in time, Urban Meyer wasn’t a national name in the college football coaching business. There was a time, he wasn’t a coach at all but a player looking to make his way at the University of Cincinnati.

His journey took him from Ohio to Illinois, out to Colorado, back to the Midwest in South Bend, to small-town Ohio, out west to Utah, before his most successful gig in Gainesville, and now back in Columbus.

At Ohio State, Meyer found a player who took him back to those days in Buckeye defensive lineman Joel Hale.

“Coach Meyer says that I remind him a lot of himself when he was my age,” Hale said this week. “So that’s pretty positive to see where he’s at now. That’s positive for me moving forward.”

Like Meyer, Hale is not a star for his football team. Throughout his five years at OSU, Hale played both offensive and defensive line but struggled to lock down a starting position due to injuries. While this is frustrating, it hasn’t stopped him from learning and getting better, something Meyer admires in a player.

“He's one of my favorite players,” Meyer said of Hale. “He's a guy that loves Ohio State. He's one of the toughest guys on the team. He's a guy that's an inspiration, pushes guys, grinds guys. In the offseason, he's one of Coach Mick's favorite guys. I believe he should coach some day. He knows how I feel about that.”

Great to see Joel Hale earning a defensive champion status against Minnesota.

When Joel was the nose tackle 2 years ago, no one ran on the ball on tOSU.

At minimum we have better depth now. At best, we have an upgrade at the position.

Teams didn't run the ball in 2013 (if that is even true, which I find dubious without feeling like looking it up) because they passed the ball at will against our completely dysfunctional secondary.

I'm very happy Hale is stepping up and contributing when the team needs him. I hope Schutt is able to play again soon.

FIGHT TO THE END: OHIO STATE DEFENSIVE TACKLE JOEL HALE

65148_h.jpg,qitok=OBCERIFw.pagespeed.ce.jD7M2YGy2g.jpg

Ohio State's 2015 senior class has a chance to win its 50th game over a four-year period New Year's Day in the Fiesta Bowl against Notre Dame. Before kickoff in their final collegiate game, Eleven Warriors will take a brief look back at each player's time in Columbus.

WHERE HE'S FROM
Joel Hale was an early-enrollee in Ohio State's 2011 recruiting class who came to play for the Buckeyes despite the sanctions looming from the infamous tattoo scandal.

A native of Greenwood, Indiana, Hale earned the state's Mr. Football award as a senior at Center Grove High School 2010. He was Indiana's fourth-rated prospect as a three-star defensive tackle — the position at which he started and finished his career at Ohio State, with a stop on the offensive line in between.

TOP MOMENTS
Hale did a bit of shuffling throughout his five years at Ohio State. He spent the 2014 season working with the offensive line after his first three years were spent on defense.

An injury, though, forced him to redshirt.

He moved back to defense to provide the Buckeyes with interior depth this past season and started when Tommy Schutt went down with a wrist injury after the Penn State game.

Hale's numbers are pedestrian at best; he has recorded just 32 tackles in his career. But his willingness to change positions and his ability to provide Ohio State with depth at difficult positions is what has made him a big part of the program.

“He’s one of my favorite players,” Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer said of Hale earlier this season. “He’s a guy who loves Ohio State. He’s one of the toughest guys on the team. He’s a guy who is an inspiration, pushes guys, grinds guys."
