DT Garrett "The Gladiator" Goebel (official thread)

If Hunter does come on board, like we're hearing, that leaves one spot left for DL recruiting, most likely for a DE with more natural pass rush skills (Ethan Johnson or Kapron Lewis-Moore being our best shots).

Does that mean that you don't think Goebel will be as high of a priority then, HBG?

I wasn't expecting Goebel to end up at ND in the first place and IMO, a commitment from Hunter will pretty much hurt any shot ND had with Goebel. Would ND take a commitment from Garrett? Definitely, but I'd imagine Johnson and Lewis-Moore will get shown a lot more attention, considering there isn't an abudance of good natural DE's on ND's roster.

I agree with that logic (and with the fact that Johnson seems like he would be a good fit with ND). I guess what I am getting at is ND prepared to take Garrett no matter who they have committed or will they back off if they land Hunter and feel good about their chances with Johnson...

I agree in principle with most posters here. Ethan Johnson, Kapron Lewis-Moore, and Chancey Aghayere got offers ahead of Goebel with regards to ND, and all are viewed as more of the true "pass rusher".

The only way I could see it increasing ND's efforts with Goebel is if they want to try to wrap up DL recruiting before the fall, and concentrate on different positions for the fall/winter. Beyond Hunter and Goebel, the remaining DL prospects that ND has offered are either on record as waiting 'til at least the fall, or haven't given indication of when they'll pull the trigger.

We'll have to wait and see, since it is feasible that ND try to wrap up on their biggest hole on defense, but my gut feeling tells me they'll take a shot at some of their earlier offers if Hunter verbals. It probably bodes well for OSU's odds with Goebel, but you never know. You might also see Michigan step up their efforts for Goebel, if they miss on Hunter - who they viewed as a virtual lock.

According to the UM board, scout is saying that Hunter is an ND verbal. If that is true, I would think it helps OSU with Goebel.

I know the depth chart can be a concern for many players but I suspect what will ultimately help the Buckeyes is the fact that the coaching staff and team want Garrett to be a part of the Buckeye family.

If Garrett keeps training at his current pace (and continues to recieve GOD'S BLESSINGs / protection from major injury)I agree with you about depth chart / competition however I foresee Garrett making a contribution (not being redshirted) his freshman year.(Not as a "first teamer" but rising to the competition). How could a D-lineman (2008 prospect) not improve while practicing with Brewster, Adams....other stud OL commits (not to mention seasoned veterans). That is one BIG difference with OSU staff in terms of recruiting....they make a kid feels as though he is being accepted / cared for by a "family" not a successful, respected football program (which may be more intimidating to some high scholl recruits...luckily Garrett's wrestling background has taught him the difference between RESPECT vs. INTIMIDATION). Garrett comes to Columbus this Sat., leaves late Sunday.

Does anyone here know if he already has, and/or if he intends to visit Michigan in the near future? While many here (me included) suspect it will cool off Notre Dame's interest/pursuit in Goebel, the Omar Hunter verbal would only cause Michigan to pursue him more actively.

He has talked about going to Michigan after visiting tOSU this weekend, but I don't know if it is definitely in the plans or not...

Garrett plans to visit Michigan on Friday, June 15th. No other definite visits set as he hopes to sort things out and make a decision before start of football workouts.
