DT Doug Worthington (Official Thread)

While I think that our society's manic paranoia over drunk driving has gone much too far, Worthington needs to be suspended.

This is just going to open up the whole issue of Tressel's credibility on a national level, "the 3rd stringer gets serious punishment, but the star isn't suspended." "We look at the whole body of work" Huh. That's a lousy cop out, and if it were coming out of the pie hole of Fulmer or Bowden everyone on this board would be jumping all over it.

I don't give a rat's ass about the "whole body of work" that young Mr. Worthington has put up. All I know is that he was arrested while driving drunk with false plates on his Escalade. And BTW, where the hell did he get a frickin' Escalade?

Jim stated Doug is a good kid. Kept his nose clean for 3 years, had a bad mistake. Antonio messed up right off the bat, and a precendent needs to be set from what I can gather.

The Escalade coversation came up a long time ago...it's legit. It's a 2004 or 2003 and his parents are financially stable, and aren't paying a college tuition. The insinuation that it must be illegal is disresepctful to Doug, IMO.

As the cliche goes, trust the coaches. Hasn't Jim done enough in his tenure at OSU in regards to players and off-field behavior to not second guess how he handles off field incidents. The improvement in off-field issues is night and day from the Cooper years and has overall been very good in comparison to the rest of the country.

A couple of points in response. I support Tressel, and I've been pleased with the overall improvement in off-field incidents. That, however, doesn't mean that, as an alumnus and financial supporter of the university, I have no right to question what's going on or, in certain instances, disagree with a course of action. Support does not necessitate blind trust or buying into some cult of personality. Tressel is an employee of the university--a very high profile one at that--and I'll hold him to an appropriate level of scrutiny. Nine times out of ten, I'll probably support Tressel's position, but there have been instances where I think he's just plain been wrong--e.g. Robert Reynolds should have NEVER worn a Buckeye uniform again, and his "body of work" since leaving the university would, in hindsight, seem to support that position.

Taking issue with a certainTressel decision does not constitute a lack of ultimate support.

As for the Escalade, I'm relieved to hear it's legit. That being said, and given the massive amounts of corruption and jock-sniffers that hover around major college football, I'm always going to be wary when a football player is rolling in a flashy car.

Frankly, I'm pleased that Jim Tressel makes his decisions without giving too much thought to the "issue of credibility on a national level." He doesn't seem to care too much about what the pundits or fans of other schools might think about anything he does; he is his own man, and I'm glad of that.

Maybe but isn't this stereotyping just like going to parochial schools might be classified.

So when a player shows up in a flashy car no one's supposed to raise an eyebrow or question it out of fear of "stereotyping." That's the first step on the road to Bowdenville. I certainly hope that Gene Smith's compliance office doesn't take such a politically correct line of reasoning. I would hope that any player's car above and beyond a '74 Pinto is looked into and vetted.

Actually, I'd vet the '74 Pinto too. That thing's become a damned classic by now.

We are beating this to a dead horse. My point was that if you are going to be wary of a player showing up in a flashy car don't you think the coaches would be or the other players or the compliance people. We should get back to Mr. Worthington. I am sure he has been punished in practice and will be punished when the starting lineup is introduced tomorrow:(

Worthington should not play IMO. While I think people go nuts over DUI's and Doug didnt blow a high number, it's still dangerous to others that he's operating a vehicile under the influence. I have no idea why he wouldnt be suspended for a game regardless of his "body of work"

Probably because Coach Tressel knows far more details about the situation than you or I. And there probably exists more punishment than is being reported as well.

If he ends up getting in the game, I'm not at all uncomfortable with it...if he doesn't, I'm cool with that too. I think Coach Tress is a man who has weighed the situation and is doing what he feels is fair considering every detail (even those unbeknownst to us).

I'm probably going to take some shit for this, but if Rich Rodriguez would have let Kevin Grady play against Utah you guys would have continued on and on about the decline of Michigan morals. I think DUIs are one of the dumbest things you can do out there. How is it okay for a player, any player at any team, do go unpunished for a DUI? I realize he's "kept his nose clean" and what not, but if you get a DUI, you deserve even bigger of a punishment than one game.

First of all, who's said he's gone unpunished?

Tressel said, "...he did have an issue, and we resolved it..."

Just because we don't know what that 'resolution' was/is doesn't mean Worthington is getting off scott free.

I trust the integrity and judgement of the man, Jim Tressel.
