OSU notebook: Past rulings offer Worthington hope
Wednesday, August 6, 2008

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Based on recent history, chances are good that Ohio State defensive tackle Doug Worthington will avoid a fall-quarter suspension for drunken driving.

In the 2007-08 school year, fewer than one in three students brought before the school's judiciary panel for drunken driving were suspended, according to Ruth Gerstner, communications director for the Office of Student Affairs.

Of 17 students, five were suspended for the next quarter, 11 received some form of probation, and one case was dismissed, Gerstner said.

Worthington, 20, has pleaded not guilty after being arrested and charged July 26 near Ohio Stadium. He has an Aug. 25 pretrial date.

The school's disciplinary procedure is unrelated to the court case. Any student charged with DUI on campus faces a hearing in front of the judiciary panel.

Gerstner said the outcomes vary depending on factors such as whether it was a first offense and whether lives were endangered.

It is believed to be Worthington's first offense. He was pulled over for going 41 mph in a 25-mph zone and had a blood-alcohol content of 0.095.

In April 2006, offensive tackle Alex Boone pleaded guilty to DUI, but was not suspended for fall quarter despite more damaging circumstances. Boone was involved in a two-car accident and had a blood-alcohol content of 0.159.

WORTHINGTON SORRY Defensive lineman Doug Worthington apologized publicly for being arrested late last month and charged with driving under the influence. Ohio State police pulled him over near Ohio Stadium because he was driving 41 mph in a 25-mph zone. Worthington stayed holed up in his apartment in the days following his arrest. "It takes more than a couple of days to get past something like this," Worthington said. "I was down in the dumps the whole weekend. I didn't eat or sleep too much. It took another two weeks to realize it's in the past and I have to move on. I feel worse for other people than myself. I feel like I let so many people down. I'm not that type of guy. It won't happen again. It's a humbling experience."

A discussion about what the legal limit should be, etc., belongs somewhere else than in an individual player's thread.

I've moved that stuff to the ref locker. If you wish to discuss it, please go BAC to this thread.

What the legal limit should be is on the other side of the universe from what my point was, so I'm going to delete the post.

Worthington in limbo

Heacock said he wasn't sure of the status of junior defensive tackle Doug Worthington for the opening game Aug. 30 with Youngstown State.
Heacock said athletic director Gene Smith and coach Jim Tressel will make that call, as Worthington deals with legal issues. He was stopped July 26 for speeding on campus and subsequently charged with drunken driving.

Here are the comments that Buckskin86 referrred to.

REPORTER: Is Brandon Saine, what's his status going into this game and also Doug Worthington, will he play?

COACH TRESSEL: Yeah, Brandon Saine, the trainers said today they felt he was like 95 to 100%. And sometimes with those injuries, right when they're starting to feel better, it's dangerous, and last week was that week, so we tried to keep him from overdoing it last week. He made a nice play in a live situation which shows the explosion that we all enjoy seeing him have, so I think Brandon will be fine. He's missed practice time and practice is critical, but he's going to be able to ease his way back into it. As far as Worthington goes, Doug will be suited up and ready to go. Exactly when he'll get his car keys back in the course of a game, I don't know that answer at this moment, but it won't be at the beginning.

REPORTER: Is the situation resolved?
COACH TRESSEL: I think it's moving along toward resolution and it is resolved from an institutional standpoint, but he's got some other things to take care of, but I think we're in good shape.

Worthington to play; Tressel mum on other questions

COLUMBUS ? What's brewing today with the 2008 Ohio State Buckeyes ...
BUCKEYES BUZZ: One of the lingering questions heading into the opener Saturday at noon against Youngstown State is how much and when returning starting NT Doug Worthington will get to play.
Worthington failed sobriety tests when he was charged with two counts of driving under the influence in the early hours of July 26. The 20-year-old from Buffalo, N.Y., also was charged with speeding and with having a plate on his Cadillac Escalade that belonged on another car.
Worthington is listed as a backup to starter Nader Abdallah.
"Doug will be suited up and ready to go," coach Jim Tressel said Tuesday. "Exactly when he'll get (to play) in the course of the game, I don't know that answer at this moment. But it won't be at the beginning."

OSU Notebook: Worthington will suit up against YSU
Wednesday, August 27, 2008
BY TODD PORTER
[email protected]

COLUMBUS When Ohio State's coaching staff found out one of their most reputable players was pulled over and charged with driving while intoxicated, they were a bit surprised. But defensive end Doug Worthington will suit up and be available to the Buckeyes in their season opener Saturday.

Head Coach Jim Tressel likened Worthington's legal problems ? underage drinking and driving ? to taking the keys away from your child as punishment. Worthington will not start Saturday.

"As far as Worthington goes, Doug will be suited up and ready to go," Tressel said. "Exactly when he'll get his keys back in the course of a game, I don't know that answer at this moment, but it won't be at the beginning."

Worthington has publicly apologized to his teammates and OSU fans for his run-in. The 6-foot-7, 276-pound redshirt junior started 11 games last year. Worthington had a pretrial hearing earlier this week. Tressel said the issue has been handled as far as the team and university is concerned, but it has not run its course in the legal system.

Interesting perspective on Tressel's administration of discipline.

Tressel rejects suspension for OSU lineman Worthington following DUI charge - Ohio State Buckeyes Football, Basketball, News, Blogs and Photos - cleveland.com

Third-string quarterback Antonio Henton missed seven games last season while waiting for his case to play out following an arrest for soliciting a prostitute. Defensive tackle Doug Worthington, a major contributor on the defensive line, will play against Youngstown State on Saturday following a July DUI arrest, though his case was continued Monday and his pretrial hearing won't occur until Oct. 1.

You'd think Jim has built enough credibility amongst the general media to not have his discipline techniques come under scrutiny.

The turnaround from Tressel to Cooper and even among the rest of the Big 10, tOSU has been well behaved. Yes, there have been some hiccups, but nothing excessive.

If Tressel says Doug is a good kid, and he made a mistake, I'll trust his judgement and leave it at that. Of course, Columbus journalists have to try and catch Jim in a double standard, and Bruce Hooley has to insinuate that Jim is wrong for not assessing a harder punishment due to Antonio's suspension last year.

Tressel explains Worthington case

Tressel said he takes into account "a whole body of work -- the total time that a young man has been here," when deciding whether a player charged with a crime should be suspended.

That's why defensive tackle Doug Worthington, who is facing a drunken-driving charge stemming from an arrest July 26, will play Saturday, but former quarterback Antonio Henton missed seven games last season while fighting a solicitation charge.

"Doug Worthington has done a tremendous job here at Ohio State," Tressel said, "and he did have an issue, and we've resolved it to the agreement of how we're feeling about what we ought to do next, and so he's going to have an opportunity to play. How much? Tune in."

On Wednesday, defensive coordinator Jim Heacock said he was told Worthington might be available "toward the end of the game."

Worthington faces a pre-trial hearing Oct. 1, meaning a trial likely won't take place until November.
