DT Depth and Recruiting (Split from Barksdale)

...like Jay Richardson...

Richardson was very highly regarded, even before he landed on OSU's campus. There were stories of him blowing up in the Ohio PA all star game and having NFL frame and quickness. He's been dominant in every spring game that he's played in. If it wasn't for an injury, Richardson would have shined last season as well.

Point is that he was considered an under-achiever until this year... Goes to show why Nader (who was just as highly regarded) can't be counted out...

DT's will be Denlinger, Worthington, Rose, Larimore, and Abdallah
DE's will be Wilson, Gholston, Barrow, Ryan Williams, Walter Dublin, and Ben Martin (if/when he commits)

Not that I disagree with you those players won't become good/great players down the road, but you are basically just rolling names off the roster. Denlinger and Worthington are sophomores. Larimore is a freshman. Rose is a DLer. Youth may develop into greatness down the road, but again, even Pitcock wasn't as dominant as he is now last year. Abdallah has to show us more for him to be included in the discussion...

You could see Rose play a Darrion Scott-type role as well... Move all around the line, sometimes inside, sometimes out... Wilson could do that as well...

Scott is one of the most physical DLer that we've ever had. Besides the fact that both Scott and Rose have the speed to play both DE and DT, I don't know how accurate that comparison is at this point. Remember, we heard chatter during the season that Rose's weakness comes against the run.

Nothing wrong with that D-Line depth, but we HAVE to get some new blood in next year... And we are FAR from dead with Cameron Heyward this year also... And I don't care what anyone says, Jeremiah is still an option if he gets himself qualified...

I'm all for us getting more bodies. Can't have too many able bodies in the trenches.

I think you have to differentiate underachievement due to injury from underachievement due to controllable factors (Abdallah, Cotton and Maupin).

That is unless JR had some other problems--but I remember Jay pushing Kudla and starting most of 2004 before banging up his knee which kept him out of the KSU Fiesta Bowl.

Denlinger's name is not just being rolled off of the roster, imo.

Richardson was often knocked for taking plays off... which is partially why big things were expected from Wilson.

You mean Denlinger is no longer on the roster?

Point taken. Denlinger is someone that I expect to have a pretty big season next season and become a leader on the DL. He's got all the tools.

It wasn't all injury problems... Richardson was on again off again for his 3 years on the field before this one... Sometimes he'd show, and others he wouldn't... It frustrated the heck out of the staff, which is why they challenged him so much this year...

I think you are worrying too much about players' age and ignoring the fact that they are extremely talented and well coached... Are they going to be as good as Pitcock and Patterson from the get-go? No... But that is an unrealistic expectation if that is what you are going by...

I'm not going to argue with you here. That's what makes me a Buckeye homer, right?

By the way, if Denlinger has the kind of season that we anticipate him having, and if Worthington comes on like Gholston did this year, there would absolutely nothing to worry about for next year. With that said, I would still like a few more DTs in this year's class...

I think one guy that will eventually end up with his hand down is Mark Johnson. He has kinda been forgotten due to his early season injury, but the kid is huge and I think will outgrow the Mike position.

I also think some of you guys are kidding yourself with Rose. He is going to move down, he is just too big. I don't understand why it is a big deal. I understand that he might end up with more sacks from the outside, but if you have guys like Gholston, Wilson, Martin coming off the edge the guys coming up the middle getting the push are as important and with his quickenss off the ball he is going to draw double teams all game long freeing up lbs to make plays. It is a win win situation for us to move him down there, with his size and quickness off the ball. Get your 4 best guys and let them go at it.

Rose is bigger than Richardson at 270 and Wilson at 275? He looked very thin on the field to me. Sometimes I had to replay it to verified that it wasn't a LBer on that play.

I'm not saying Rose can't play DT. He just looks more explosive coming off the edge, and with that speed, it's going to be impossible for RBs to get to the outside. Is there something else that we should know besides that Rose is very very big that would make us believe he is better suited at DT?

it may not be so much that he's better suited at defensive tackle as it is that next year's defensive line may be better suited with him at defensive tackle.

Exactally, that and the fact that his frame is just going to continue to add weight. He will be 300 lbs by the time he leaves here, so why not move him down earlier and give him more time to adjust to playing inside.
