DT Depth and Recruiting (Split from Barksdale)

I think we're fine but at the same time it sure would be nice to get some naturally bigger guys to come in as DT's. Sometimes when you convert ends to DT's they lack that gritt to just say I'll take a beating for the team and take up space. Where as the kids who've done it throughout high school know how to do that and know what to expect coming in as DT's. So I guess sure it's all good to have some ends gain some weight and start at 280-300 but I'd rather recruit a couple kids who are right around 300 and give them a year or two at THE DT position to learn it inside and out. Where as if you're an end first you have to learn the DE's stuff, then gain the ton of weight, then if you've gained enough weight you're moved to end, then FINALLY you're able to learn the position.

I think the natural DT's who come in and know what to expect are in a better position to be dominant players by the times they are seniors. Where as DE's who switch have that transition and even if they do gain weight maybe they're not as physical as a DT needs to be?? So I think it goes both ways here, either way tosu should be able to add 2 DT's to this years class because of our depth. If we end up with ZERO true DT's then I question the thinking there because you can never have enough big bodies.

Richardson was very highly regarded, even before he landed on OSU's campus. There were stories of him blowing up in the Ohio PA all star game and having NFL frame and quickness. He's been dominant in every spring game that he's played in. If it wasn't for an injury, Richardson would have shined last season as well.

Thanks for the good words about my boy. DSHS!

i'm sure this has been mentioned somewhere along in this thread, but it amazes me that after the national championship run we've had this year, the success we've had developing DL talent and sending to NFL, and the upcoming shallow DT depth, that we've been unable to close the deal on a number of top prospects for which we had the lead.

I know we'll be fine, we always overcome, but it just seems like there were so many factors working in our favor to land a few blue chip DL recruits.

DL is an area where it is good to have a lot of depth for rotation, protection against injuiry etc. hopefully the numbers will work out with position changes etc.

I remember a few years back when we really need OL and struck out on 2 5star in state recruits (Munoz, and Hall) signed 0 OL recruits and ended up having a depth issue that took us a a few years to overcome.

DL is probably a bit easier to move some folks down from DE, but I am still hoping a DT prospect or 2 comes out of nowhere and ends up being part of this class.

With Martin and Barksdale choosing to go elsewhere, that leaves Still and Heyward as the only two big time DL guys left that tOSU has a shot at this year.

I am dissapointed that Martin chose UT, but with the overwhelming depth that tOSU has at DE it is not that big a deal, except to those concerned about the fence. You can't keep them all, at least he didn't consider scum or the staff lose one to scum this year.

I also wonder if UT didn't tell Martin that they might give him a shot at MLB, which is the position he played most this year in HS.

Still has been said to be on the fence between PSU and tOSU, but with his size he could be a good possibility to move inside from DE, though he is tall.

Heyward has been thought to be staying in the South, but with Barksdale not in the mix, that may help Ohio State's chances (not that I like guys choosing schools knowing they have little competition, just saying). With the surprises we've seen this week, you can't count Heyward out here.

Alright, I'm done rambling. Go Bucks!

"(Gholston) is going to be an anchor on that defensive line, but you know we have great guys coming in," Penton said. "The reason you didn?t see them much this year is just the personnel (OSU had returning). I think they?ll shock a few people."

Saw this quote in Gholston's thread, and thought it to be pertinent to the discussion we were having here. Evidently, the upcoming guys have shown some good things in practice.

I remember the hit we took when Munoz went to Tennessee, and Hall took his flute to Kentucky, Shaker. You're right, it took us a bunch of time to recover. Since then, we've sent some decent O-linemen to the league, and although we're not as prolific as Iowa or Meatchicken, we do pretty well. Heck, Wisconsin gets a good one every four years or so.

D-line seems to be an easier position to 'upgrade' to. If Worthington is at 285, he's gonna be like Patterson was. The difference seems to be a mentality thing. However, I too, am concerned that even with our success in putting people in the league (O-line, D-line, DB and wide-out), we couldn't close the deal on some of the good ones. And, two of them were reputedly in our pockets, but slipped away (always hate to lose a good Ahia boy to Phat Phil).

Heacock seems to know his business. This Defense this year was nothing short of amazing.......losing 9 starters and coming up with a BETTER defense than last year, when 6 (?) were drafted. Again, in other threads I have expounded on the D coaches taking a 3* and 'coaching them up'. But there is a logjam at DE, so don't mind Martin, but Barksdale would have been in the two deep as a true frosh. That one I can't understand. Anyone out there help me clear away the fog? (if it has been espoused, tell me the thread and the number please). Thanks. Go Bucks tomorrow night (and always)!
