Drew Barker (official thread)

Won't suck if we land Watson.

Also, I know Meyer wants a QB in every class but we really don't NEED a QB next year if we strike out on Watson and can't land another one.

Assuming J.T. successfully comes back from his injury. If he doesn't, then a stud quarterback in this class is imperative.

No doubt we need at least one QB. Only a couple years between Braxton and Kenny, we have no idea how Cardale Jones will progress (UFM had some positive comments towards the end of the year but for awhile it was not sounding good), and we have no idea how Barrett will turn out/recover from his injury. If we don't land Watson, I absolutely want Barker but the staff has always seemed to have a different order.

I remember our offensive coordinator saying earlier in the season that 4 QBs was the optimal number to have on a team. I might speculate that his view is that having more than 4 creates unhappy QBs and transfers and also scares away potential recruits.

Personally, I would like more than 4.

It was before school started last Thursday at Conner High School that junior quarterback Drew Barker had just completed showing recruiters from Vanderbilt and Michigan State his throwing arm when he headed to the weight room and looked up from his workout in time to make eye contact with another visitor.

It was Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer, who became the latest in a growing number of college coaches interested in the 6-foot-4, 210-pound Barker.

Meyer?s visit was the final one in a whirlwind week that saw several other recruiters, including newly hired University of Kentucky coach Mark Stoops, make a stop at the Hebron school to show interest in Barker before a dead period on contact started last Friday.

They have good reason to come, too, as Barker is ranked the No. 5 quarterback prospect nationally in the Class of 2014 by Scout.com and No. 6 by 247sports.com.

It?s all pretty heady stuff for a guy who played mostly as a wide receiver in middle school before bursting onto the national recruiting scene the summer between his freshman and sophomore seasons with an exceptional performance at a scouting combine.

He followed that up with two productive seasons on the field in which he rushed for 2,799 yards and 40 touchdowns and passed for 3,104 yards and 26 touchdowns.

The scholarships offers are starting to come fast and furious. Among those who have made formal offers, according to Barker: Purdue, Louisville, South Carolina, Illinois, North Carolina, Tennessee, UK, Indiana, UC, Western Kentucky and Louisiana-Lafayette. Ohio State hasn?t offered yet, but probably will.

Miami offering is pretty much the equivalent of illinois, purdue, BC or any another mid level team offering. Miami is still trying to live off of their "swagger" from 10-30yrs ago. Im not worried about that offer. I still believe we hold the chips in this if we offer.

Drew is showing spine, daring tOSU to go to second place on plan B, after plan A cancelling his visit to Columbus. You gotta like that spine.

Just like Drew, somewhere out there in the cornfields of Ohio, a Roethlisberger is just now getting to play QB, in his senior season ....

UK Football: Conner quarterback Drew Barker is finally getting interest from Kentucky
By LARRY VAUGHT [email protected] Central Kentucky News

Conner quarterback Drew Barker is ranked among the nation?s top 100 juniors by one recruiting service and already has 14 scholarship offers, but he admits he now has a big interest in Kentucky because of offensive coordinator Neal Brown?s system. (Photo Contributed / September 28, 2012)

He?s a four-star quarterback who has impressed recruiting analysts and will be one of the leading contenders for Kentucky?s Mr. Football honors next season. Yet Kentucky was not one of the 10 schools that had offered Conner?s Drew Barker a scholarship until offensive coordinator Neal Brown changed that after watching Barker throw during a recent morning workout.

?It?s not like he has just surfaced as a top quarterback. Louisville offered him last spring. He has 10 other others. It?s just that Kentucky finally offered and that got his name out more in the state,? Conner coach David Trosper said. ?The old Kentucky staff did not offer him. They recruited him just a little bit, but did not offer even though Rivals.com ranked him very highly and he had offers from Cincinnati, Western Kentucky, Purdue, Illinois, North Carolina, Louisiana Tech and South Carolina.?

Barker, ranked among the nation?s top 100 juniors in some recruiting services, has added offers from Vanderbilt, Miami and Mississippi since he got his UK offer and now has 14 scholarship offers.

Trosper thinks Barker was a bit miffed UK?s previous staff did not show more interest in him, but that will not work against new coach Mark Stoops and Brown.

?He does know Neal Brown?s background and how he fits in with what he does,? Trosper said. ?With the previous staff, he probably had a little different feeling that the home state school did not offer a scholarship. But now he definitely has an interest. He has what they like and we?ll see what happens. I think after signing date (Feb. 6) you will see business pick up even more with Drew.

Barker said not being recruited by former UK?coach Joker Phillips did leave a ?bad taste in my mouth? based on the offers and interest he got from Louisville and Western Kentucky.

?When the new staff came in, I did not really think I liked Kentucky. Then they got in touch and I called them and we talked,? Barker said. ?The first thing they told me was not to hold grudges and come with an open mind to visit. It?s a brand new staff and new people. They knew the situation with me. They just wanted me to come down with an open mind. I?came and left impressed and definitely interested in Kentucky.?

Barker works out daily before school throwing to receivers. Brown came to watch a January workout and didn?t need long to tell Trosper that Barker was the type of quarterback he liked to have run his offense.

?I think he fits exactly what Neal ran at Texas Tech,? Trosper said. ?Neal had been impressed with what he had seen on film already. There?s no doubt he is a player. He rushed for over 1,400 yards and threw for over 2,000 last year. He is a combination type guy that can run and throw. He does a lot of checks at the line.

?We run the spread and he?s very versatile. He probably won?t be quite that way in college. He is not a sprinter, but he runs a 4.7 (second 40-yard dash). He?s 6-4, 215 now and will be 240 or 250 pounds in a few years with the same speed. He is a broad-shouldered kid and can cause a lot of problems for defenses.?

Trosper said Louisville offensive coordinator Shawn Watson told him Barker has the ?best release he has seen in 21 years of coaching? and Trosper says the ?common person? can?t stand 10 yards away from Barker and catch his ball.

?He really peppers it. It comes out of his hand hot. He has that gift,? Trosper said. ?He has a tight, compact release. That?s the reason the big dogs like him. He throws a pretty ball.?
Barker had met Brown when he went to Kentucky for an unofficial visit to see a basketball game. Before that, the two had talked on the phone often. Barker was at UK?s first Junior Day and even posted pictures of himself in the Kentucky dressing room wearing UK jerseys.

?We have a good understanding of each other, but it was good to meet coach Brown in person the first time. That?s going to be a big part of my whole college decision. Just the people you will be around is important. He could be coaching me the next four or five years,? Barker said. ?It?s big to have a good relationship and really know the guy who will coach you.

?I thought he was genuine and very straight forward. Some guys come off like used car salesmen trying to make their points. He seemed very genuine and tells it like it is. I really liked him.?
Brown is only 32, but Barker says age is no factor.

?That didn?t really even come to my mind. Younger coaches, if anything, tend to have more energy and fire. They can be a little crazy and run around more, and that?s kind of cool,? Barker laughed and said. ?I?could tell all the coaches at Kentucky were hungry and want to get on the right track and the program turned around.?

Barker thinks the best part of his game, and something he says is translating more to the NFL, is his ability to be elusive.

?I can run around and make the defense play 11 on 11 and account for the quarterback,? Barker said. ?If you have to worry about the quarterback running, it is a whole different game and lot harder for the defense to defense. My ability to run is one of my biggest assets. It helps me in the passing game. If a defense loads up the box for the run, I?just throw on them. If they play back, I tuck the ball and run.?

Last season Barker ran 218 times for 1,422 yards and 18 touchdowns and completed 140 of 225 passes for 2,067 yards and 22 scores with just seven interceptions. As a sophomore in 2011, he ran for 1,371 yards and 22 scores on 212 carries and completed 93 of 181 passes for 1,009 yards and four scores. He got in four games as a freshman and rushed for 178 yards and one score and threw for 28 yards by completing nine of 15 passes. For his career, he?s rushed for 2,971 yards and 41 touchdowns and thrown for 3,104 yards and 26 scores.

Drew Barker talks about getting 115 letters in 1 day from UK
Posted on March 26, 2013 by Steve Jones

Drew Barker is used to getting a lot of mail.

As one of the nation?s most heavily recruited quarterbacks, the Conner High School junior usually finds 15 to 20 letters in all each day from the multitude of college football coaches who want him to play for their team.

Tuesday, however, was an exceptionally busy day at the mailbox, thanks to Kentucky coach Mark Stoops and his staff.

Barker received 115 hand-written letters from the UK staff alone, with each coach, offense and defense, telling him he?s the Wildcats? No. 1 recruiting priority in 2014.

?I opened up the mailbox like I do every day, and they started falling out,? said Barker, a four-star player ranked as the nation?s No. 153 junior by Rivals.com. ?I was like, ?Oh, my gosh.? It was insane what it looked like in my mailbox. It was all crammed in there, and they had a bunch of rubber bands around them. It was pretty awesome, and I was pretty shocked.?

Barker posted a picture of the letters laid out, nearly covering his entire kitchen table.

All of the envelopes were ?customized,? Barker said, with his No. 7 written somewhere on the outside and ?my name?s all decorated,? and each letter had a different message.

He said the most pieces of mail he had previously received from a single school was about 50 from South Carolina, and he said he?s gotten 40 a couple times from other teams.

Barker said he received about 150 letters in all on Tuesday, including others from North Carolina State, Louisiana State, Louisville, Vanderbilt, Notre Dame, Mississippi State and more.

Those schools all sent one or two pieces of mail apiece. Barker said Stoops, himself, wrote about 10 letters.

?I?ve seen some other crazy pictures of guys getting a bunch of letters in the mail, but I?ve never really seen 115,? the said. ?That was pretty nuts. I didn?t really know what to think.?

Barker says Spurrier showed much love during visit

Published: March 26, 2013
By Phil Kornblut

USC coach Steve Spurrier made it clear to QB Drew Barker of Hebron, KY during his unofficial visit over the weekend that he is the quarterback he wants for the 2014 class. Barker says Spurrier went beyond his normal recruiting efforts in dealing with him Friday during practice.
"Coach Spurrier called me over during practice and I was in there with him when he was calling plays, standing with him on the field when they were doing seven on seven and scrimmaging," Barker said. "I was just walking around and talking ball with him and he was explaining the plays. Coach Mangus told me after practice I was the first quarterback he's ever done that with. Usually you are supposed to stand over on the sidelines. I thought that was pretty cool. I definitely could tell coach Spurrier really wanted me on this trip. He spent a lot of time with me and definitely wanted me to know that I was wanted there."
