Drew Barker (official thread)

What are your thoughts on his throwing motion?

My thought is that if he can lead the offense down the field and win football games at Ohio State who cares about his throwing motion.

Let NFL scouts and combine wonks worry about stuff like that.

I was really only curious. Like I said, I like his film.

Well then, it is all about having a quick release. The quicker the better, which makes wind-up throwing motions bad because it delays the time from the start of the throw until the ball is out of the QB's hand.

In Barker's case, he generally holds the ball up near his chest when he is scanning the field which is what you're supposed to do. He might have a slight wind up before he throws but it is nothing glaring and can almost certainly be improved upon given additional coaching and practice.

As OH1O points out, his throwing looks accurate down the field and that is the most important thing (outside of decision making).

'86 is right on. Mechanics are wonderful, but useless if the brain makes bad decisions. Seem to remember a kid named Bernie Kosar, that had a horrible motion (a wounded duck was one of his better passes), but led Miami (the one in Florida) to many bowls, and then the Brownies in the pros. Dan Marino had the quickest release, and had many yards in the air, but won zero championships in the college ranks or in the pros. Go figure.

In golf, it's not 'how', it's 'how many'. Same thing applies in football, but in the immortal words of Yoda, it's 'there is no try, there is either "do" or "do not" '. If he's a winner, then I'm sure we all hope he is a Buckeye.

:gobucks3::gobucks4::banger: This week end against Purdue was a great case of 'Doing'.

Not really a fair comparison, seeing as Marino never had a run game in the nil, and was aalways rumored to never want one. The browns were more balanced back in the day.
But barker is putting up some great stats, and sounds like he'd be a perfect fit for our offense

Barker ready for first look at USC

By Phil Kornblut
Junior QB Drew Barker of Hebron, KY will make his first real visit to USC this weekend for the Tennessee game. Barker dropped by the campus last summer on his way to Folly Beach, but this will be his first opportunity to get the game day experience at USC. His parents will join him and they will drive down to Columbia after his game Friday night. "I'm looking forward to meeting all the coaches and interacting with the coaches," Barker said. "I want to see the game day atmosphere. There will be a lot of things I'm looking forward to." Barker has been to Ohio State, Cincinnati and Louisville this season. He's not sure about future visits. Barker said he's in regular contact with USC recruiter GA Mangus. His offers are USC, Louisville, Purdue, Western Kentucky, Illinois, Cincinnati, Indiana and Louisiana-Lafayette. He does not have a favorite. "I'm just enjoying it all," he said. This season Barker has passed for 1661 yards and 18 touchdowns and he's rushed for 1061 yards and 13 touchdowns.

USC moves to the front with Barker after visit

By Phil Kornblut
Junior QB Drew Barker of Hebron, KY visited USC unofficially over the weekend with his family. Barker arrived late Friday night and left Sunday afternoon. "It was a great visit," Barker said. "The game was awesome, the atmosphere was great." Barker said he spoke several times with recruiter GA Mangus and met with Steve Spurrier before the game and Sunday afternoon. "Their offense fits my skill set because they really pass it and run it with the quarterback," he said. Barker went into the locker room after the game and this morning had breakfast with Mangus and later went on a tour of the campus. "South Carolina really impressed me with this visit, the best visit I've had," said Barker who has also been to Ohio State, Louisville and Cincinnati. "It really, really intrigued me a lot. They are in good position right now. Of my offers, South Carolina is definitely my number one. They are at the top." Barker was so impressed, he said, he thought briefly about committing. "I thought about it a little but I wasn't tempted because I knew I wasn't going to do it," he said. "They have drilled into my head that they want me." Barker said his decision could come as soon as December or January. He has his playoffs coming up and will be focusing on that and said the only other visit he has planned is to Ohio State for the Michigan game.

The number one and number two most important things for a high school and then college quarterback are: Football intelligence and leadership character. Being a great athlete and throwing motion are important as well, but I think you will find this holds true in 99% or the cases.

Watch List QB will visit Irish, Buckeyes
October, 31, 2012
By Jared Shanker | ESPN.com

Notre Dame has offered only one quarterback in the 2014 class, but an ESPN Watch List member will make it to South Bend in November.

Junior quarterback Drew Barker (Hebron, Ky./Conner) has been hearing from the Fighting Irish a lot recently, and in turn he will make a Nov. 17 trip to South Bend. The Irish will host Wake Forest in Notre Dame's last home game of the season.

"I thought I'd check it out," said Barker, a 6-foot-4, 205-pound signal-caller.

Watch List QB Barker wants early decision
November, 5, 2012
By Dave Hooker | ESPN.com

Drew Barker has a plan, albeit a tentative one.

The junior quarterback from Hebron (Ky.) Conner told ESPN on Monday that he'd like to announce his college decision in January, February or March. However, that's not set in stone.

When asked why he wanted to announce his decision so early, Barker said, "Just to focus on my senior year and to start to recruit for my school. If I don't feel right during those months then I won't do it,but that's what I'm shooting for."

Ohio State pays QB Drew Barker a visit
November, 9, 2012
By Brad Bournival | ESPN.com

Quarterback Drew Barker (Hebron, Ky./Conner) is becoming very familiar with Ohio State.

An attendee at the spring game, the ESPN Watch List junior took an unofficial visit to The Horseshoe for the season opener against Miami (Ohio) and is planning another for the Michigan game on Nov. 24.

The admiration apparently goes both ways as assistant coach Zach Smith paid a visit to Barker's high school on Friday.

While Barker doesn?t have an offer just yet -- only Clemson commit DeShaun Watson (Gainesville, Ga./Gainesville) has received one among 2014 quarterbacks -- it?s obvious there is serious interest in the 6-foot-4, 205-pound junior.

Rivals$--Barker getting closer to a decision?

Drew will visit ND and then tOSU again. He is very interested in the Buckeyes, plans to ask about where he stands on an offer, and wants to make a decision in the spring.

Hope he gets the answers hes looking for. If he does get the offer, I could see him jumping on it soon after, and obviously being a leader of the '14 class.
