Drew Barker (official thread)

Fogle, Barker lead Conner past Holy Cross

Trosper was quick to credit the decision making of junior quarterback Drew Barker, who rushed for 142 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries and completed 4 of 10 passes for 112 yards and a touchdown in just 2 1/2 quarters.

"Drew has the green light to make checks and he does a great job of it," said Trosper. "He probably made 5-6 checks and I think they all got us into a great play."

Barker said for the record he made a wrong pass protection call on one of the checks, but that he enjoys the freedom of changing plays at the line.

"It's really fun to play in this offense, because I just take what I see," said Barker, who is considered one of the top quarterback prospects in the nation in the Class of 2014. "Our offense really has a lot of things we can do."

Barker Recaps Ohio State Visit
By Michael Chung

(Editor?s Note: This is the latest contribution to the-Ozone for Michael Chung. He has provided OSU recruiting information to several websites in the past, but now will be exclusive to the-Ozone as we look to bring more football recruiting coverage in the coming months. You can follow him on Twitter @MChungOzone).

We all know quarterbacks now play a bigger role in football than ever before. A good quarterback, as witnessed by last years Indianapolis Colts, can be the difference between a playoff team and a team with the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft ? which of course they used on a quarterback.

With few exceptions, your quarterback is your destiny.

So all eyes will be on Kentucky QB Drew Barker in the class of 2014. With J.T. Barrett on the way in the 2013 class, Ohio State will likely only take one QB in the class of 2014.

There are currently 4-5 targets on the board and the staff is discussing which ones to offer, but one name at the top of their list is Barker.

Standing 6-3 and 210 pounds out of Conner High School in Hebron, Ky., Barker is one of the top dual-threat quarterbacks in the nation ? something Meyer and his staff covet.

He is hoping to make his decision by summer 2013, but Barker already holds early offers from Cincinnati, South Carolina, Louisville and Illinois.

He visited Ohio State for the Miami (Ohio) game this past weekend and took time to share with The-Ozone how his recruiting experience, and the visit, are going.

Ozone: You took a visit to Ohio State over the weekend, how did it go?

Barker: It went great. The atmosphere was nuts ? 100,000 people in one place. I had been there for the spring game, but the intensity was rocking and the vibe in the air was much more electric than the spring. I was watching the offense and I really like what they are doing, they started slow, but once the game progressed the Buckeyes ran similar things that my high school does so the system fits well with me.

Couple of interesting questions/answers:

Ozone: Cameron Burrows, Jalin Marshall and Darron Lee also were there; did you talk to them much? What were they doing?

Barker: I did not really talk to them. I talked to Dante Booker a lot. He and I are friends and we sat close to each other. I have a group of elite 2014 recruiting prospects as friends and Dante is one in that group. Dante likes OSU a lot, felt the atmosphere was awesome. I am friends with Raekwon McMillan, Dante Booker, Clifton Thaddeus Snodgrass, Artavis Scott, Orlando Brown, Mikael Horton and a lot of other guys. We have talked about playing together to try to win a championship.

Ozone: Did you receive an offer? If not, what did the coaches tell you as far as an offer?

Barker: They did not, but on ESPN All-Access, I was watching and paused it and there was board in the coaches area. On it was a list of QB prospects and I was No. 1 on the board. Hopefully they offer me and I have a vibe that they like me.

Unfortunately those that have broken down the big board have pointed out that recruits might not necessarily be ranked in any kind of order...

Impressive looking prospect who already has great relationships with other big-time recruits, and he covets an OSU offer. He'd be hard to pass up.

Coaches are being careful and I respect that. They know there are several QB prospects to scout and choose from. If they can, they'll take the whole season. The more information, the better the decision. And the 2014 QB decision could be very big.

Barker does not have an Ohio State offer but said the Buckeyes? coaches have told him he?s significant part of their 2014 recruiting picture.

Barker had already been to Ohio State on a crowded day ? to watch its spring game in front of a packed house ? but he was happy to see the campus again on a true game day.

?I already knew what to expect ? atmosphere-wise because their fans are just crazy,? he said. ?They had 105,000 people in there, and the place was just rocking. The intensity was really high.

?But I was really paying attention to the offense that coach (Urban) Meyer and (offensive coordinator Tom) Herman were running. It started off a little slow, but once it got going, they just steam-rolled Miami of Ohio. I liked what I saw, and they have a lot of similarities to what we run at my high school.?

Barker said he talked with Herman, also the quarterbacks coach, after the game in the locker room, and he told him that Barker is one of four junior quarterbacks whom the team is evaluating for possible offers.

?I?m in that definite four, so it was good to hear,? he said. ?They?re just going to keep evaluating and watching how my season goes.?

He planned to attend Cincinnati?s home opener tonight against Pittsburgh and said he might attend Purdue?s game against Michigan on Oct. 6.

Barker has been a dual-threat success so far for Conner (2-0). He has completed 10 of 23 passes for 323 yards and three touchdowns and has run 21 times for 205 yards and three TDs.

You can tell Drew has worked on his release...a little more compact and over the top. If he can tighten it up a bit more, his velocity will get better though. Looks much better throwing across the middle and to the far sideline as well.

That being said, Drew is still my favorite QB recruit for 2014 so far. Kid's competitive fire, leadership, overall athletic ability, and toughness is phenomenal. His running style reminds me a ton of Tebow, but his accuracy on his intermediate throws and deep outs is markedly better at this point in his career. I think Henderson is the better pure QB prospect, but Barker is the better player. Considering how much Urban loves competitors (and I can't say I know what Henderson's is like), I wouldn't be surprised to see Drew as target 1a. Personally, I would HATE to not see him in S&G...I think he fits our offensive scheme like a glove.

I like how he already has good pocket presence. He especially seems to have a good sense of when to take off and scramble but keeps looking downfield until right before he makes the decision to run.

He also runs the read option and practice makes perfect on that.

The Buckeyes have some great options to choose from at QB in 2014 and Barker seems like one of the top options if he isn't at the very top.

He appears to throw very accurate downfield. I think that's important in a spread because it forces the opposition to defend horizontally and vertically, opening up the running game. Little concerned about footspeed, though he would be above average for a college quarterback in that department.
