Donovan "LLL" PeopLLLes-Jones (WR Cleveland Browns)

But there are people who are able to pull it off. For example Krenzel was a Molecular Genetics major, a pretty difficult syllabus in its own right.

Right.

No one criticizes Krenzel for failing to go to med school, while "Doctor Bob" (Robert Smith) still takes flak from certain quarters, despite the fact he had an actual NFL career unlike Craig. Unfair IMO.

It's an impressive thing, regardless of what ultimately happens, for a young athlete to aspire so high academically. Good luck to Mr. Donovan-Peoples, wherever he matriculates.

I think the crap RS catches is about the 'skip class for practice' thing and then end up not going to med school. If memory serves, is wasn't exactly as he suggested it happened, no?

But, yes... we all knew people who had far less demands who couldn't hack it. Anyone who plays D1 anything and has a major like that impresses he heck out of me.

That would be one difficult load. A former player of mine is at Northeastern playing basketball and he wants engineering. That first semester kicked his butt academically with all the work required of a D1 athlete for athletics.

True, but even if his GPA is lower, it is much easier to get into a top medical school having played a D1 sport (especially football) at a high level. I've seen it first-hand. The interviews are also much much easier.

And while Michigan and OSU are great schools (Michigan, as much as it pains me to say this, has an excellent pre-med program and medical school), they're also state schools and graded to the curve. Given a solid athletic D1 career and other favorable demographic/other aspects of his application, he could very likely get into medical school with anything north of a 3.0
