COLUMBUS ? Right or wrong, it?s one of the unwritten rules of football. No excuses.
Even when you?re hurting badly enough that you?re playing at maybe half of full strength if you?re lucky, no excuses.
That is a quick overview of Ohio State?s 2012 football season for defensive lineman Michael Bennett.
A lingering groin injury kept him out of four games and limited him to 11 tackles in the eight he did play. Not exactly what he or anyone else expected from someone who went into preseason practice regarded as a potential starter after recording three sacks as a freshman backup defensive lineman.
How much did Ohio State like him, going into last season?
A year ago, OSU coach Urban Meyer said, ?It?s hard for me to say he?s not one of our four best (defensive linemen). ?
Even though he was injured, Bennett played on, without excuses. And even in retrospect, he won?t use the injury as an explanation for a season he obviously wanted to be much better personally.
?I?m not going to say I was hurt the whole year but obviously you don?t just recover from a groin injury very quickly,? Bennett said. ?Last year was a rough year all around but I?m just happy that at some point I could get back on the field and help those seniors go 12-0.
?During last year I would have said it was a lost year and I probably should have redshirted. But now I look back on it as a good year to build myself up mentally and go though that kind of adversity and realize I?m not bigger than the team and whatever the team needs I?m going to give them,? he said.
