DL Michael Bennett (National Champion)

A healthy Bennett could be big for Buckeyes

COLUMBUS ? Right or wrong, it?s one of the unwritten rules of football. No excuses.

Even when you?re hurting badly enough that you?re playing at maybe half of full strength if you?re lucky, no excuses.

That is a quick overview of Ohio State?s 2012 football season for defensive lineman Michael Bennett.

A lingering groin injury kept him out of four games and limited him to 11 tackles in the eight he did play. Not exactly what he or anyone else expected from someone who went into preseason practice regarded as a potential starter after recording three sacks as a freshman backup defensive lineman.

How much did Ohio State like him, going into last season?

A year ago, OSU coach Urban Meyer said, ?It?s hard for me to say he?s not one of our four best (defensive linemen). ?

Even though he was injured, Bennett played on, without excuses. And even in retrospect, he won?t use the injury as an explanation for a season he obviously wanted to be much better personally.

?I?m not going to say I was hurt the whole year but obviously you don?t just recover from a groin injury very quickly,? Bennett said. ?Last year was a rough year all around but I?m just happy that at some point I could get back on the field and help those seniors go 12-0.

?During last year I would have said it was a lost year and I probably should have redshirted. But now I look back on it as a good year to build myself up mentally and go though that kind of adversity and realize I?m not bigger than the team and whatever the team needs I?m going to give them,? he said.

From 'liability' to leader: Michael Bennett, the 'chubby boy who didn't want to do anything', becoming a force on Ohio State's defense

Michael Bennett Michael Bennett discusses his emergence on the Ohio State defensive line. By Zack Meisel, Northeast Ohio Media Group
September 13, 2013
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- At times last year, he was "nonexistent." When he appeared, he was "a liability."

Those are the words Ohio State coach Urban Meyer carefully selected when discussing defensive lineman Michael Bennett.

Bennett doesn't mind Meyer's diction. It's not the first time the junior has experienced tough love.

Both of Bennett's parents -- Connie and Mike Sr. -- graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

"I remember Michael saying we were always the strictest parents of anybody he knew," Connie said.

Great article. He is playing great but he just seems like the kind of guy who still has some more in him. I am ready for full on beast mode and I think he can fire up the other guys to push themselves as a group. LOVE how he talks about Simon - the guy who is still making his mark on this team.....how awesome is that?

I remembered his folks being in the military from his recruitment and I always thought this guy had it in him to be a leader. Last year you couldn't tell his potential because of his injury, etc. I think most fans assumed we lacked leadership on the D Line this year because all the starters were new. It looks like we have one in Bennett. He talks like one but most importantly plays like one. Our D Line is going to be straight up NASTY next year assuming he comes back. The thought of Bennett as a senior along with every single one of our contributors returning is insane. Lead the charge Mike.....you obviously have it in ya.

Can anyone remember the last time we had a DT this good at pass rushing? We usually have success against Wiscy speed rushing from the edges but I don't remember a DT ever having as much success as he had. Stay healthy and it's looking like an all-conference year
