DL Michael Bennett (National Champion)

SKULL SESSION: JORDAN FULLER'S IMPORTANCE, BAD AP POLLSTER, AND MICHAEL BENNETT'S COMEBACK

MIKE BENNETT ALL THE WAY BACK.
I remember thinking Michael Bennett was the steal of the 2015 NFL Draft when he fell all the way to the sixth round, and I still think that's a good take.

He's had tough luck with injuries thus far, but he's finally ready to go.

From Jacksonville.com:

Bennett, a sixth-round pick by the Jaguars in 2015, is still just 25. But it would be difficult to blame him if he felt about twice that age.

The Ohio State product has played one game over the past two seasons; he totaled one tackle and one pass defensed during a Week 2 loss to Tennessee last year. Two days later, Bennett was placed on injured reserve because of a pectoral injury.

It was the second time in as many seasons Bennett landed on IR. He missed the entire 2016 season with a calf injury. That came after a promising rookie year when he totaled 10 tackles, a half-sack and two quarterback hits in 13 games.

“To go from two really tough years injury-wise to feeling the best I’ve felt since probably early high school when it comes to my body is huge,” Bennett said. “I feel great this year. I’m excited that I was able to show them enough to make it on the team. Now I’m just trying to move forward and produce.”

Bennett was every bit as key to Ohio State's 2014 national title run as guys like Joey Bosa, and he spent the second half of his senior season absolutely decimating opposing offensive lines.

I think he's going to make the Jaguars look very smart for drafting him, sticking by him as he recovers, and giving him a spot on the 53-man roster even though he hasn't played football in two years.

Bennett’s NFL career has been plagued with injuries. After playing in 13 games his rookie season in 2015, Bennett missed the entire 2016 season with a leg injury and all but one game of the 2017 season with a pectoral injury.

Despite playing just one game the past two seasons, Bennett is at or near full health this season and made the Jaguars initial 53-man roster.

Rookie contract breakdown: Michael Bennett's deal worth $2.4M

Here's a closer look at the contract that the Jacksonville Jaguars gave sixth-round pick Michael Bennett:

Length: Four years.
Total amount of contract: $2,418,700.
Total amount guaranteed: $138,700.
Signing bonus: $138,700.
Yearly breakdown: Bennett will receive a base salary of $435,000 in 2015, $525,000 in 2016, $615,000 in 2017, and $705,000 in 2018.

He could get picked up by another team or for a team's practice squad. Even if he doesn't, he did good for a 6th round dfraft pick. The average NFL career for a DL is 3 years.

This would be another blow to a defensive line that lost defensive end Steven Means to a torn Achilles during organized team activities (OTA). Bennett looked to be one of the players competing for a primary role in Atlanta's defensive line rotation for the 2019 season.

Bennett played two games for the Falcons in 2018, recording five tackles, including one tackle for a loss.

Michael Bennett is designated as a restricted free agent after spending all of last season on the Atlanta Falcons’ injured reserve with an ankle injury. That means the Falcons will have an opportunity to place a qualifying offer that allows them to match any other Bennett receives, but it’s uncertain whether they will before Wednesday’s 4 p.m. deadline. If they don’t, he’s only likely to receive a one-year non-guaranteed deal on which he’ll have to earn his way onto another team’s roster, as he has been plagued by injuries and appeared in only three regular-season games over his past four NFL seasons.

Current, former Buckeyes stars set to graduate
Ohio State is much more than just an NFL factory. The Buckeyes coaching staff and administrators stress academics and stress earning a college degree. Two current Buckeyes football players will earn their degrees this weekend.

Linebacker Baron Browning and captain Shaun Wade will receive their degrees Sunday afternoon. Browning, a communications major, will be a key part of the Ohio State linebacker room this season. Wade put off the NFL to return to the Buckeyes, and the sport industry major will earn his degree, as well, while becoming a leader of the Ohio State secondary. Former Ohio State football player Michael Bennett will receive his degree, too.
