Disgraced Former Penn State DC Jerry Sandusky (convicted child molester)

With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more.

Didn't you have hindsight of prior allegations/incidents when McQueary came to you in '02, Joe? This sounds completely disingenuous.

Typical jailhouse conversion BS. (One of my early posts on BP was a rant against those--not a sympathetic fan.)

With all the free time JoePa has in his future, perhaps he can write a book.
For his first effort, I suggest JoePa's Revised Dictionary of the English Language.

He can start with his definition for the word "hindsight".

Hindsight: a passive verb, frequently associated with self-interest and inaction.

Conventional definition: The ability to understand, after something has happened, what should have been done or what caused the event

Paterno definition: Regret experienced when your prior self-serving choices come back to bite you in the @$$.
Deep self-centered sorrow that you have forfeited anything due to the irreparable harm your past choices have caused to others.

Free time?!? An 84 year old with tons of free time, eh?
How much time would that be? He appears to be barely holding on any damn way.

With the time he probably has, he'd get the forward on the book done and that's about it.

Yes.

That was exactly the point of my post.

I'm glad you got it.

John McQueary (the GA's dad who reportedly counciled Mike McQueary, who phoned him immediately after witnessing the shower rape incident, to "leave the building and come to his home") weighs in:

"He's a good kid and a tough kid," John said standing on the front porch of his State College home late Tuesday afternoon. "He did what he was supposed to do, and all of this has been very hard on him. Everything from this and about this (case) has been difficult for him, but he's a strong person and will be OK."

"I love football, too and obviously my son's a football coach, but I could care less about who takes over for Joe or whatever may go on with that," John McQueary said. "It's not about that. This is about a little boy, and that's something that makes this so tough on all of us."

If I were asking him questions on his porch, I'd ask him "Why did you give such morally reprehensible advice to your son 9 years ago, John? Shouldn't you have advised your son to intervene? It is about a little boy, after all."

It's not the first time a segment of the student body/fan base unconditionally supported a beloved coach. There will always be a portion of the population who will overlook and/or defend anything, or simply blame someone else for their hero's actions (or inaction).

So let me ask this question - yes, the two offenses that JT and what happened at PSU are WORLDS apart.

But as tOSU fans, having had the off season you guys had this past year, do you think that you have a better understanding about the bolded above, and can make a more informed judgement on this PSU situation (as it pertains to the beloved coach part)?

do you have a better understanding about jim tressel after the cody glenn incident?

not sure what "mer" means, but... pelini suspended glenn in '08 for an unspecified violation of team rules. after being drafted, glenn admitted that he was suspended for selling tickets. glenn then did a 180 and claimed, "oops... i was just joking... har har" (but did not give another reason for the suspension).

anyway, child rape is far removed from selling trophies for tattoos that i don't at all see how one can compare the coaches who withheld information. we're comparing apples to orangutans here.

Anyone remember this?

Another reason why I'm full of I don't give a fuck for Penn State fans.

But Nittany Lion fans can surely take solace in that their issues -- petty crime, quarterback transfer insecurity, Joe Paterno's health -- pale in comparison to the storm surround their Big Ten rival.

Another gem from the comments section:

It's simple...no need for apologies or justification...a coach SAT ON INFORMATION FOR MONTHS THAT STATED THAT HIS PLAYERS VIOLATED RULES...THIS MAKES HIM AN ACCOMPLICE AFTER THE FACT IN THE RULE VIOLATION...AS HE TRIED TO COVER IT UP...LIKE IT OR NOT...HE SHOULD GO AND IT'S HIS OWN FAULT...there you go.

This idiot was probably at the JoePa rally last night.

"kid"???

Are you serious? Isn't Junior in his mid-thirties now? Maybe that's half the problem...Daddy's little boy forever.

Relieved to learn that Junior's OK, though. Because, God knows, how well the grown-man-who-abandoned-a-young-child-being-raped is doing was weighing heavily on my mind. :roll2:

You couldn't make this cr*p up. I'm beginning to think the water treatment facilities in PA should be investigated. It's looking like there may be some chemical contamination that affects brain activity.

Mer = not sure of where you were going with that, nor what Cody Glenn's situation (who was kicked OFF the team, not suspended) has to do with the question I asked.

Not trying to compare what happened at tOSU with what is currently happening with PSU. I was ONLY looking at the fan bases. tOSU had a beloved, well respected, highly regarded in ALL circles (and still is, by my standards) head coach that did something that he had to pay for.

My statement was only about the defending of said beloved, well respected, highly regarded coach, and how you can look at the fans at PSU and compare that to what happened at your university earlier this year. You guys had differing opinions inside your fan base (at least that I saw) on what needed to be done, what had to happen. Basically, like a small, brief family disagreement.

I don't see that same thing happening at PSU. The student body and most of the fan base are BEHIND JoePa. And that's the confusing thing for me (and apparently others). How can you support a man who admits he should have done more?!?
