Disgraced Former Penn State DC Jerry Sandusky (convicted child molester)

It's not the first time a segment of the student body/fan base unconditionally supported a beloved coach. There will always be a portion of the population who will overlook and/or defend anything, or simply blame someone else for their hero's actions (or inaction).

So let me ask this question - yes, the two offenses that JT and what happened at PSU are WORLDS apart.

But as tOSU fans, having had the off season you guys had this past year, do you think that you have a better understanding about the bolded above, and can make a more informed judgement on this PSU situation (as it pertains to the beloved coach part)?

If Coach Tressel had covered up Doc raping children I'd be kicking in both of their damn doors.

Tress screwed up; no doubt about it - bad enough that it cost him his job - and deservedly so. However, Tressel is still highly revered and respected in the football community. Not sure you'll be able to say the same about joePa in a year.

How long is this going to hang over PSU in the long term? I mean, SMU is still remembered as the school that got the death penalty after all these years. Is PSU forever going to be known as the school that knowingly harbored child sex predators?

Most Ohio State fans still supported Tressel when it came out that he didn't do his due diligence and handle the situation properly.

In the situation at Penn State, if McQueary were my own brother, I'f be throwing under the bus right now. His lack of action when he witnessed Sandusky and the 10 year old in the shower, is absolutely inexcusable.

Get that little boy safely in your care and CALL THE GOD DAMN POLICE!!

I think it is also important to note that Jim Tressel's failure was a result of trying to protect young men from a criminal.

Joe Paterno's failure was a result of protecting a criminal at the expense of a child.

Anyone who places another person so high on a pedestal that they are blinded by their failures has serious problems. Be it coaches, rock stars, politicians, etc. People are people and they will fail you. The things you put on that pedestal are the ideas, the aspirations, the convictions. Not the person. The things that these people may stand for are great, the people very rarely are...

Yeah you know obviously there is a huge difference here in the nature of the crime. I think most rational Buckeye fans realize that Tress made a bad decision and he paid dearly for it. But I refuse to believe that JT is a bad man...I've heard and seen way too many amazing stories over the years in how he has helped young people to believe that he is this big fraud that the media wanted to portray him to be.

Now we don't know all the details with Joe Pa...so it's hard to say how fans will support him...but it certainly doesn't look good for Joe. Don't know how a fan of that school could still feel good about him at this point...IMHO.

Excellent point. I think that most folks that are tOSU fans that I spoke with while that was all going on were like, "We love JT, we support what he did, but he has to pay the piper." And when he did, most understood the decision.

Which makes me scratch my head at the PSU fans. It seems most are looking elsewhere BUT at the guy who leads that team.

Penn St is a different beast. State College, PA exists because of University Park. It's in the middle of nowhere in the center of the state, seemingly built there only because it's in the geographic center of the state (in a county named "Centre County," no less).

There are 45K students enrolled at PSU and an academic staff of nearly 9K full and part time teachers. The population of State College in the most recent census was 42K.

There is nothing else there other than the university system. If you don't work at the university, you probably work at a fast food joint or Wal*Mart that only exists there because that's where faculty and students go. If you don't live in a dorm or some sort of student housing, then you probably live next door to a teacher, an administrator, or a Paterno.

It's a lot like College Station and the Aggies. "Unconditional support" is a gross understatement. It's a cult.

I really would love to see the number of individuals working for the AD & the Unviersity itself that played for Paterno. It seems like virtually everyone there was hired from within.
