Cleland also said Sandusky will be allowed to introduce an alibi defense, but only if it's based on new evidence arising from the discovery process.
In criminal law, an alibi defense is when an accused person asserts that someone can vouch that he or she was with them, somewhere else, instead of committing the crime(s) charged to the defendant.
Patriot-News wins Pulitzer for breaking Penn State scandal
NEW YORK (AP) - The Associated Press won a Pulitzer Prize for investigative journalism Monday for revealing the New York Police Department's widespread spying on Muslims, while The Patriot-News in Harrisburg, Pa., and a 24-year-old reporter captured the award for local reporting for breaking the Penn State scandal that ultimately brought down Joe Paterno.
...
At The Patriot-News, Sara Ganim, a police and courts reporter, won for "courageously revealing and adeptly covering the explosive Penn State child sex scandal," the Pulitzer judges wrote. At 24, she is one of the youngest journalists ever to win a Pulitzer; at least one prior winner, Jackie Crosby of the Macon Telegraph and News of Georgia, was 23.
Ganim broke the news of the grand jury investigation into allegations against former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky. She was also the first to report his indictment on charges of molesting several boys involved in a charity he ran. Sandusky has denied the allegations.
The scandal ended Paterno's lustrous coaching career, prompted the ouster of Penn State President Graham Spanier and led to a nationwide discussion over the place of big-time sports on college campuses.
"Better than any award, the most rewarding thing through this whole process has been people telling me that this story and our coverage has changed their minds about local reporting, and we all know that there are a lot of minds yet to change," Ganim said.

Penn State president gets grand jury subpoena
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) -- Penn State President Rodney Erickson received a subpoena last week to testify regarding the investigation into former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, the university said Monday. The subject or subjects of Erickson's future testimony was not immediately clear, and university spokeswoman Lisa Powers declined to provide a copy of the subpoena, which was first disclosed by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Erickson's "attorney is discussing with the attorney general's office various aspects of the subpoena, including the actual date of testimony," Powers said. "President Erickson intends to fully cooperate and answer all questions truthfully."
A spokesman for the attorney general's office declined to comment.
Penn State said in February it had received a subpoena from the U.S. attorney's office in Harrisburg that asked for records of payments made by trustees to the school, or to third parties on the school's behalf, among other things.
That subpoena told Penn State chief counsel Cynthia Baldwin to preserve all university records and emails, including board and executive session minutes, disclosure reports and computer hard drives. It sought all Sandusky-related records and the hard drives for computers assigned to former university President Graham Spanier, former vice president Gary Schultz and athletic director Tim Curley.

Source: PSU's Sherburne connected to probe
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) -- The firing of a Penn State athletics official was connected to the investigation into the child sexual abuse case at the university, said two persons familiar with the situation.
Mark Sherburne, an associate athletic director, was fired this week, said the people who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because no one was authorized to speak publicly about the matter.
One person said Sherburne was dismissed for failing to produce in a timely fashion documents under subpoena by the state Attorney General's office related to its investigation into Sherburne's boss, Athletic Director Tim Curley. Curley is on administrative leave after being charged with lying to a grand jury and failing to report an abuse allegation against retired assistant coach Jerry Sandusky.
Messages left Friday at a number listed for Sherburne were not immediately returned.
University spokeswoman Lisa Powers declined comment Friday night since the matter was a personnel issue.
The person familiar with the firing said the documents were voluntarily produced and turned over to the attorney general's office.
It was unclear the types of documents in question, but the university has told staffers to preserve and produce documents related to the investigation.
