Judge overseeing Sandusky sex-abuse case delays trial three weeks
HARRISBURG, Pa. -- The judge overseeing former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky's child sexual abuse case on Thursday delayed the start of the trial by three weeks to early June, and prosecutors filed a lengthy court document that said the case should not be dismissed.
Judge John Cleland said the additional time was needed "to accommodate various logistical contingencies that have arisen," and the attorney general's office supported the postponement.
The prosecution's 21-page answer to a catch-all pretrial motion that Sandusky's lawyer submitted a week ago said the commonwealth had "broad latitude" to establish the dates of allegations in child sexual abuse cases. Sandusky has asked for more specifics about when the alleged crimes occurred.
"Defendant cannot exploit the appalling breadth of his own criminal conduct by claiming it encompasses so long a period as to hamper his defense," wrote chief deputy attorney general Frank Fina.

In response to a petition by Curley and Schultz to have the charges against them dropped, the Pennsylvania Attorney General's Office provided a list of 15 times in which they said Curley lied to the grand jury, and 18 for Schultz.
For example, prosecutors said that when an attorney asked if then-graduate assistant Mike McQueary "did not specifically tell you there was anal intercourse occurring between Jerry Sandusky and this child," Curley lied when he responded with, "Absolutely not, that he did not tell me that."
When Schultz was asked if McQueary had related what he saw when Sandusky and a boy were allegedly showering together on campus, the former head of campus security responded: "No. My recollection was McQueary and Joe (Paterno) both only described what was observed in a very general way. There was no details."
Sandusky judge limits lawyer comments in sex abuse case
HARRISBURG, Pa. -- The judge overseeing the child sex abuse case against former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky issued a gag order Monday that severely limits what attorneys on both sides may say to reporters. Judge John Cleland's order also applies to any law enforcement investigator who has worked on the case and anyone acting on behalf of the lawyers.
The off-limit topics include evidence; opinions about Sandusky's guilt or innocence or about the merits of legal and factual matters under discussion; and "the reputation, character, credibility or criminal record of the defendant or any witness, prospective witness or organization which is or may testify at trial, or be the subject of trial testimony or evidence."
He directed the lawyers to "make reasonable efforts" to limit statements by witnesses or the witnesses' lawyers and to be able to prove they have taken those steps.
Cleland said he was acting to help ensure a "fair, impartial and orderly trial" for Sandusky, a proceeding scheduled to begin June 5 in Bellefonte.
