Destin, FL - Family Vacation ?

Trying to plan a family vacation next year. The time would be the latter half of April and would include a 4 year old and 2 year old. I am looking for some place that will ensure good weather, but still is drivable with two little ones (leaving from West MI).

Has anyone been to Destin, FL? I have talked to a couple people around here that have been there, but I wondered if anyone had suggestions of any places in the south that would be warm and geared more toward families than college kids (Man, I am getting old.).

The water at Destin is liable to still be a little cold in late April. The strip from Destin east through to Port St. Joe is all pretty family friendly. My suggestion would be to stay outside of Panama City Beach, although at the time you're talking about spring break should be over and summer won't have started, so it shouldn't be too bad, and drive in to PCB during the day - all the kids' stuff is there. Kids could be bored out of their minds in Destin. Grayton Beach, between PCB and Destin, is great, but the whole area is pretty good. Depending on how long you're staying, renting a house or a condo works well. If you don't mind spending a little more than Destin, Seaside is great (where they filmed The Truman Show).

disney world isnt bad either....the kids may be a couple of years away from both of them being able to enjoy it though....

panama city has beautiful beaches....and more stuff for kids than destin....just make absolutely sure that all of the spring breaks are done before you visit....you may even want to make sure there is a two week buffer between the last spring break and your visit.....

We had a family vacation there two years ago. It was the best vacation we have ever had. The beaches are beautiful! We have been to Panama City, Ft. Lauderdale, St. Pete, Cocoa, and many more FLA beaches and this place is tops! A total family atmosphere! I would recommend anywhere on the emerald coast. Destin or Fort Walton and surrounding communities. How old are the kids?

Destin is the "official" vacation spot for New Orleans residents.
I'll be heading there in less than a month. We go at least once a year, usually more.

Rugby is correct, April can be a cool, wet month. The water will be cool and you would be surprised how many springbreakers are there. They raise the rates for Spring Break and then they go down afterward and start back up starting Memorial Day.

On the other hand it is a very beautiful place and it will be much warmer than Michigan. My kids swam in our pool in late April. Many places will have an indoor / outdoor or heated pol.

I just reread your post. Most younger kids will play on the beach or in the water. Some older kids, teens and preteens, get bored of that quickly. There are more and more activities for the young ones but the beach is the major attraction.

Do you have a specific place in mind? Let me know if I can provide any more information.

Friday, June 1, I am helping a friend move from Columbus to Destin, Florida. It is on the panhandle, somewhere between Pensacola and Panama City. I am looking for anyone who has been there, or knows anything about it, because I have an opportunity to spend the summer down there, and am looking for some short-cuts on job opportunities, etc...I also just want to know what it's like. BTW, I am not a large feller, but my Laurinaitis jersey is going with me, just for shits and giggles. Help, anyone!!

Okay, everyone, not the start we were looking for, but it's a start!! hehe..
Thanks, Buckyle, that's better than nothing to go on at all.

The bright side is, I'm not going for a non-stop party, but I almost never turn one down. We get there Saturday, and I fly back on Tuesday the 5th, so if I hit a beach and a bar, it sure as hell beats the living shit out of northwest ohio, at least for a given weekend.

The moving there part is more of a function of me helping out a friend, needing a summer job, and not having shit for jobs to find up here. But honesty is definitely what I covet, so keep it coming!

Jobs shouldn't be a problem. If you grew up even near a farm, and can drive mowing equipment, and have a little golf course acumen, you can find work mowing fairways about anywhere. Many times you can even set your own hours. I've had a lot of guys cut for me from like 3 till dark. The schedule went like this. Wake up at noon, stumble to fairway mower, cut fairways with eyes closed all afternoon, wash mower, go home, shower, eat, drink heavily, chase high school girls till 4 AM, pass out... Repeat..... Opportunities will exist until fall, or a hurricane, witch ever comes first.

I hear there is always a dire need for people who walk out and collect balls on the practice driving ranges!
