Jobs shouldn't be a problem. If you grew up even near a farm, and can drive mowing equipment, and have a little golf course acumen, you can find work mowing fairways about anywhere. Many times you can even set your own hours. I've had a lot of guys cut for me from like 3 till dark. The schedule went like this. Wake up at noon, stumble to fairway mower, cut fairways with eyes closed all afternoon, wash mower, go home, shower, eat, drink heavily, chase high school girls till 4 AM, pass out... Repeat..... Opportunities will exist until fall, or a hurricane, witch ever comes first.

When can I start?

You will have no problem finding work down there. My previous employer was based down there in Fort Walton Beach. Destin is very nice. Spring break down there is actually pretty boring (its not hot enough yet) . Destin and that area is quite differnent than the southern part of the state as far as vacationers go.
While the Atlantic and Southern Gulf coasts attract all of us northerners and old fuckers during the period from Thanksgiving until April or May. Destin and Panhandle area are more of a summertime destination. For the most part Destin and that area are like South Alabama. Most of the vacationers there are from Miss, Ala GA etc. They have tons of nice golf courses and there are quite a few good bars there. Summertime is much busier than spring. I would do it if I were you.

The airport there sucks. It is basically a shed with two gates and the flights never leave on time.

Thank you to everyone who responded to my question. With only a week to go until we leave, it's getting easier to see myself trying it out for a summer. I would pack now, but I have to use most of that stuff another few times yet...:tongue2:

Friday, June 1, I am helping a friend move from Columbus to Destin, Florida. It is on the panhandle, somewhere between Pensacola and Panama City. I am looking for anyone who has been there, or knows anything about it, because I have an opportunity to spend the summer down there, and am looking for some short-cuts on job opportunities, etc...I also just want to know what it's like. BTW, I am not a large feller, but my Laurinaitis jersey is going with me, just for shits and giggles. Help, anyone!!

Since I started this thread, I figured I would update it once and for all. I landed in Dayton last night at midnight.

Destin was pretty flippin' sweet as Napoleon Dynamite would say. Moving down there is going to be it's own animal, and I haven't decided one way or the other on that part yet. One thing that cannot be argued is finding a job. Spelling your name right should be the only requirement from what I saw. Not to say that I won't do it, it's more of finding my niche rather than working at Waffle House (what is it, one for every 3 miles traveled?) or Wings (I already have my beach towel, thank you).

I have valet'ed like a MF in Cbus and would prefer something along those lines, but I saw firsthand the kind of money that is spent there, and if you have a work ethic at all, you can do good for a summer.

I haven't moved yet, but I will probably make some phone calls....

I spent quite a few weekends over there last summer. Decent, but not great. Some pretty good bars, a fairly quiet area really. If you're looking for a party, just head a couple hours east to Panama City Beach. That's good times right there.

Man, I love that area. Considering moving there actually. Look up Johnny O'Quigleys off of 98 just across the bridge from Fort Walton Beach. Watched the YSU game there last year (I imagine they remember me :). OSU made up a significant portion of the patrons, it was a sports bar, not an OSU bar, but they made several concessions to get the OSU game on numerous big screens. It was right after the Big Ten Network went live and they were advertising that as well. I'd definitely recommend it as a "Buckeye friendly" environment. Also, they open at 11 CST because thats when the games kick off. Keep that in mind as well.
