BEAVERTON, Ore. -- One of the running backs who stood out at Day One of The Opening was Richmond (Va.) four-star Derrick Green. Showing off a nice burst for a player of his size and soft hands during drills, the affable back was just soaking up the moment as he competed amongst 150 of his highly regarded peers.

"It's a blessing first of all," Green said. "There are a lot of top guys out here so it's nice to come out here and compete with some of the top guys in the nation. It's very nice and I'm having a great time out here. I'm just enjoying the process."

The 6-foot, 215-pounder received his invite to come out West a while ago and though it was a new world for him out on the fields at the Nike campus, he was able to get a little bit of a heads up as to what to expect during the five days of The Opening.

"I spoke with Brionte Dunn, who went here last year," Green said. "He told me it was great and he had a good time and that he got some top notch stuff and so did I. It's just awesome and I'm still taking it all in."

Green recently cut his list to 13 schools after holding close to 40 offers by the time July came around and listed Tennessee, Michigan, Oregon, Ohio State, Ole Miss, Virginia Tech, Auburn, Clemson, Alabama, Miami, Pitt, Oklahoma State and Oklahoma as programs under consideration (in no order).

"Every one is standing out, that's why they made the list, it's a very even top 13," he said. "First and foremost, I'm looking for academics. I told my mother I'd get my degree so academics is first. Depth chart, atmosphere, the type of offense the school runs? lots of stuff.

"I'm going to try and narrow my list down again before the season starts. But as far as where on my officials, I don't know right now."

Green names lucky 13
By Eric Guimaraes

RB Derrick Green of Richmond, VA has narrowed his list. He calls it his lucky 13. They are Clemson, Oregon, Tennessee, Alabama, Auburn, Ole Miss, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Miami, Pitt, Michigan, Virginia Tech and Ohio State. Green just returned home from the Nike Opening in Oregon where his side won the 7-on-7 tournament. He will get very little rest as he plans to visit several schools this month. On the itinerary are Alabama, Auburn, Ole Miss, Ohio State, Michigan and Pitt. "I've been to Ohio State and Michigan before," said Green. "It'll be my first time at the other schools." Green plans to narrow his list one more time before the season begins. As for how many will make the list he said, "I'm not really sure to be honest with you. I just know I want to get it down." The Tigers remain high on his list and Green plans to attend a game at Death Valley this season. He is unsure of how many official visits he will take before making a decision. "I haven't even thought that far ahead," Green said. He has no favorites.

Hermitage's Derrick Green tops Fab 15 recruiting rankings
By Norm Wood, [email protected]

600

Derrick Green appreciates all the opportunities he's been afforded in the last three years, mainly because he's had to be a serious self-starter to make it all happen.

Green, a 6-foot, 217-pound rising senior running back at Hermitage High in Richmond, says one missed chance to meet his childhood idol still stings when he thinks about it.

Last October, Green was in the midst of his vision of sporting bliss. He was sitting in Ohio Stadium, watching Ohio State ? a program he'd loved since he was old enough to tuck a football under his arm ? play Wisconsin. To top it off, he and his mother, Fran Knight, were situated in the stands next to one of the sons of Green's sporting hero, 1995 Heisman Trophy winner Eddie George.

Perfection. At least that's what he thought.

After returning from the restroom, he found his mom beaming from ear-to-ear.

"Guess who I just met," she asked.

"Who?" Green said.

"Eddie George."

Green, who wears No. 27 because it was George's number at Ohio State and in the NFL, couldn't believe it.

"It was a heartbreaker," Green said. "My mom did get to tell him I was his biggest fan."

A small disappointment from a game that has changed Green's life ? he can live with it.

Would it be safe to assume that if the staff really wants this kid..he'll meet #27 on the 27th? Can former players attend? Is there a list of those former players that will be there?

There shouldn't be a problem with it. Schools like Miami(fl) seemingly always bring their former players back to meet with recruits. Heck ray lewis' son will soon attend Miami and has loudly voiced that he'll be there to help the defense and to recruit

Pretty sure former players will act as position coaches...

What former Miami players or even osu players were you talking about as position coaches? Jon vilma, Jeremy shockey, andre johnson, Kellen Winslow, edgerrin james, antrel rolle, etc are not position coaches yet make it to Miami every off season and come back to help recruiting for a kid that would play their position. Osu does the same thing with archie griffin, eddie George, troy smith, gonzo, aj hawk, etc.

Position coaches at FNL, "will act as position coaches".

Dawgs are offer No. 34 for ESPN 150 RB Derrick Green
July, 16, 2012
By Kipp Adams | ESPN.com

As a junior, Derrick Green (Richmond, Va./Hermitage) ran for 1,500 yards and 20 touchdowns, often being taken out early because after helping his team build a comfortable lead.

The 6-foot, 215-pound running back picked up offer No. 34 last week, interesting enough, from the University of Georgia, a program where No. 34 is associated with one of the all-time great running backs in college history, Herschel Walker. The courtship between the Bulldogs and the ESPN 150 prospect really only started at the beginning of the month, which just happens to be right after the departure of tailback and returning SEC Freshman of the year Isaiah Crowell.

?Bryan McClendon reached out to me a couple weeks ago and then offered shortly after,? Green said. ?Coach McClendon talked me about the depth at running back and how even though I would have to come in and work for my spot, that he felt I would be a great fit for their offense.?

Hermitage RB Green keeping recruitment busy
Derrick Green was offered this week by Houston, his 35th scholarship offer.
By: Eric Kolenich | Richmond Times-Dispatch
Published: July 18, 2012

Hermitage running back Derrick Green has kept busy this summer. He went to Nike?s The Opening camp in Oregon where his 7-on-7 team won the championship. He?s been to Atlanta for a Rivals camp.

This weekend he leaves for visits to Alabama, Auburn and Ole Miss. Next weekend he?s headed to Ohio State and Michigan.

That?s the life of one of the nation?s top running back recruits. He says the experience has been crazy and fun.

?It?s been kind of hectic, though, with all the traveling,? he added.

The 6-foot-0, 215-pound rising senior has been offered numerous scholarships. No. 35 arrived Monday night: Houston. Green has pared down his field to 14 schools: Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, Miami, Michigan, Ole Miss, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oklhoma State, Oregon, Pittsburgh, Tennessee and Virginia Tech.

He hopes to get the list to about five by the time the season starts. Hermitage will take on Fork Union Military Academy on Aug. 25. The game will be aired nationally on ESPNU.

I would really like to see this kid end up at Ohio State. I think he would be a nice complement to EE - who many have mentioned (which I agree with) would fill the 'Harvin' role rather nicely.

OTOH, I agree with those posters who think that we're pretty loaded up already at RB with the underclassmen we have already. However, I think if Hyde has a stellar season he will go pro. I'm hoping he has a breakout year. Carlos is the player I'm looking forward to most in the new offense, barring Braxton.

If Hyde has a stellar season, even if he does not go pro, it will bring in Green by showing how a big fast back can have success at tOSU.
