Huh? Federal minimum wage as of 2007 is $5.85 per hour beginning July 24, 2007.

U.S. Department of Labor - Find It By Topic - Wages - Minimum Wage

I don't know where he got his $5.41 figure either, however.

I guess that 5.41 figure came from the Connecticut state rules, just the first site that came up on a search. (Ir)regardless, it's higher than Ohio minimum wage for servers, my point either way being that servers who get tips make less than the minimum wage, while drivers make at least minimum wage, tips or not.

Nice Guy Eddie: C'mon, throw in a buck!
Mr. Pink: Uh-uh, I don't tip.
Nice Guy Eddie: You don't tip?
Mr. Pink: Nah, I don't believe in it.
Nice Guy Eddie: You don't believe in tipping?
Mr. Blue: You know what these chicks make? They make shit.
Mr. Pink: Don't give me that. She don't make enough money that she can quit.
Nice Guy Eddie: I don't even know a fucking Jew who'd have the balls to say that. Let me get this straight: you don't ever tip?
Mr. Pink: I don't tip because society says I have to. All right, if someone deserves a tip, if they really put forth an effort, I'll give them something a little something extra. But this tipping automatically, it's for the birds. As far as I'm concerned, they're just doing their job.
Mr. Blue: Hey, our girl was nice.
Mr. Pink: She was okay. She wasn't anything special.
Mr. Blue: What's special? Take you in the back and suck your dick?
Nice Guy Eddie: I'd go over twelve percent for that.

assuming i was her only customer, not only would she receive no tip. but she likely would end up oweing her employer money at the end of the pay period because of the taxes that would be owed on my mythical tip. so instead of getting a check, she would receive a bill.

Sounds like she should get another job. :(

You ARE Mr Pink.

Nah, cuz I do tip, I just don't go crazy.

But if someone doesn't like their job, or gets paid crappy, well then....get another job. It's not impossible.

My mother used to work as a server, I used to room with servers, I know the job and the pay sucks donkey. (That's why I at least tip a minimum.)

Everyone I know who did it, doesn't do it now, primarily because the job and pay sucks and they decided not to do it anymore because of that, as soon as they were able.

*shrug*

Always appropriate to give the late night pizza guy a bong hit!
(I know this is what you all expect of me)

While I will agree it is appropriate, it must be done with at least a little bit of restraint and delivery guy evaluation. We ended up being stalked by our pizza guy. After we had tipped him a couple times, he started stopping by even when we did not order pizza, or just if he was near our building. Got to the point where he was always around. After we moved we were afraid to order pizza from Alley Pizza anymore because we were afraid he would find us.

Most places the server has to tip out a percent of their sales to the Bartender and Busser, and sometimes the Hostess, and Food Runners (if the have one) Most of the time that percentage is about 1 to 3% of you sales. So again if the person gets stiffed, they are paying to have waited on that table.

tips are calculated based on the customers bill, not the actual tip given with the exception of credit cards. with credit there is a paper record and in those cases the tip is actually used rather than a % of the bill. if i go to olive garden and order 20 million in food then stiff the waitress not only is she getting 2.13 an hour, but she is also going to pay taxes on a tip for 20 mill in food even though she got no tip. unless i paid with a credit card.

Hmmm... weird.

Now... our weed guy delivered within an hour... and... usually we gave him a bong hit... but... not really the same thing at all.

Nevermind.

You really don't expect anyone to swallow this?

Oh, ok, this one is even worse. Why would she owe the employer anything? On what basis? There was no tip on $20, let along $20 Mill - so there is no added income (tip) for which employer or employee need pay taxes, ergo no bill.

I think you have to pay a minimum of 8% of your reciepts as income... or no one would pay taxes on the cash tips.

how do you think taxes are calculated exactly? honor system? if you pay with cash the only thing they have to go by is the sales receipt.

bingo. unless you pay with a credit card, taxes are based off of what is assumed you received in tip. which is determined by your sales receipts. ask a server to show you their most recent check. betcha money its for less than 10 bucks for a 40+ hour week. most of the servers ive worked with regularly owed money to their employers on pay day.

on a side note, the servers i know prefer their tips in cash.

You are, I think talking of tip allocation. But, as long as the wait staff keeps accurate records of their tips then they would not be hurt by this "mythical tip."

Given the rather large bill martinss hypothesizes it would have been brought to the employers attention well ahead of time - thus no harm and no foul, because you create your own paper record.

martinss - it is the assertion that she will pay taxes on non-existent income that I was disagreeing with.
Allocation is not totally fixed and for situations under which the tips received are documented to be below expectation there are mechanisms to address that imbalance.

thats at the employers discretion not the servers. prove i didn't tip them. create your own paper trail? what paper trail? the lack of money on the table? how do you prove that exactly? typically servers are given the benefit of the doubt, sure. but that isn't guaranteed and i have seen them have to report tips they never received on many occasions.

the bill in my theoretical situation was to prove the point that every table a server waits on is a potential financial loss and directly affects the paycheck they receive at the end of the week. it wasn't ment to be taken literally which is why i chose such an obsurd amount. the thought of writting up a truely accurate scenario using real world numbers for a full pay period to illustrate that point was a little more work than i intend to put into this or any other thread :p.

to be clear, i have not seen a scenario in which a server actually took a loss for an actual pay period and do agree with you that such a thing is extremely unlikely.
