Defensive Staff Next Year?

Note:
I think Parker Flemming is doing very well as ST coach.
I just question the value of a dedicated ST with only 4 defensive assistants and a HC whose specialty is offense.
I also have never heard Flemming's name in terms of recruiting.

Ohio State is Ohio State because they don’t have to overpay for assistant coaches. It doesn’t matter how much money they have. Paying over a million to an assistant secondary coach is stupid.

What's more important...a couple hundred thousand OR recruiting and can Coombs contributions on the recruiting front be easily replicated?

His contract has 1 more year....I'm betting he'll be back for it.

His recruiting can be duplicated, absolutely. He’s not the only good DB recruiter in the country. And why would you sacrifice the product on the field for some mythical recruiting prowess? Even after all its improvements and upgrades, the defense clearly can be better. Bring in a better schematic coach.

I'm pretty sure we've moved past Coombs contributions on the field. His value is entirely about recruiting and relationships with HS kids and coaches now.

You're still pissed about Saturday for some reason and it shows. Barnes is doing a great job given the shitshow he walked into. He's your DC next year.

Who said anything about being mad about Saturday? I haven’t even commented on the game. Where did that come from?

And I don’t think “recruiting and relationships” is worth the salary he’s being paid. If anything, give some of that money to Pantoni.

I'm riding with Barnes. I think Al Washington moves on. Not sure why I feel that way, but I do. If he does, bring in Mike Tressel as a Co-DC and LB coach. Let him help Barnes prepare the game plan but Barnes has proven to be a very good play caller and will only get better.

The whole scheme part of your response. It's literally all over social media right now because of Saturday. It's baffling.

We'll definitely see, but I think there's more value there than you know or can appreciate.

Coombs is also very good at developing CBs as well. That along with recruiting and relationships certainly makes him a valuable addition to the staff if he stays. Let Barnes focus more on schemes and Xs&Os and Coombs developing the DBs. Not sure why that doesn't seem realistic.

With recruiting, there could be a bit of a drop off for a short period as relationships and familiarity with an area does take time to build.

But ultimately, a brand like Ohio State can turn average recruiters into great ones, as the logo on the helmet does play a role in where recruits choose to go. For example, see how some coaches who kill it on the trail as assistants at Alabama don't do nearly as well when they move to a different program. Yes, there are others who have continued to kill it on the trail like Kirby (even exceeding Bama at times), but ultimately recruiting players to go to schools like Ohio State, Alabama, and Georgia does have some built in advantages for coaches.

I’ve been talking about Coombs’ X & O’s capabilities (or lack thereof) and fit as DC at OSU since it was rumored he would be back as DC. You can check my posts. Has nothing to do with Saturday. I don’t even post on social media. I just read it. He’s a good motivator, a good recruiter, and loves OSU. You can find that in a lot of guys, but guys who also contribute in other ways.

Most of you guys are emotionally attached to Kerry. That doesn’t change the fact that he wasn’t getting it done and it’s bad business to pay him his current salary in a reduced role.

It doesn’t seem realistic at his current salary, which is why I said: “Unless he takes a drastic pay cut, I don’t see how Coombs stays.”

If they decide to keep him as a just a position coach, and I haven’t checked, I’d assume he’d be one of the highest paid in the country and I’m of the opinion you can find someone better or equal for less money. In the last two years, he has not shown to be such a great developer of talent. As coaches tell players all the time, you’re only as good as what you put on film.

I thought position coaches — when they’re really good or recruit well — are insanely hard to replace. Then we saw this program oust Zach Smith and replace him with Brian Hartline.

Then I take a moment and realize just how insanely unlikely that was — that Hartline would literally turn into the best at what he does in the country and recruit and unprecedented levels for this program.

Damnit Hartline

Matt Barnes hasn't proven to me that he's the best available candidate for 2022 DC.
