I love the show, but i wish they would touch on the techniques the captains use to find the crab. location, depth, bait etc i think it would really showcase the talent that goes into catching these things.

I think a lot of people watch the show because they don't talk about the technical details of fishing crab.

do you think these guys would give away secrets in a multimillion dollar industry? personally i think them giving away locations, even if kind of fuzzy is suprising to me...

Exactly. I have seen episodes where they show vaguly how they set the traps and what stuff they use. But like you said they aren't going to say this is exactly what I do and how I get these big crabs.

So how do the crabs get in the pot but not out?

Why doesn't another boat come along and take someone's pots?

The bait in the pots helps keep the crabs in, and the way the pots are made make it pretty tough for them to get out. But I can't answer this for sure..

They can take each others' pots. They just don't, unless they have a reason. Sometimes one captain will make another made for whatever reason, and they'll steal the crab and do something like welding the pot shut. It can be humorous. :tongue2:

The king crab pots have tunnel openings on the side which allow entry but not exit. An interesting side note is that the pots must have a biodegradable
seam or device where, if the pot becomes lost, the seam eventually wears away and anything inside can out.

Because they know if they got caught, going to jail would be the least of their worries. I imagine the pots are marked where you can tell who is the owner.

Moi's a pussy. If I'm Phil, I'd be beating my kids ass for buying that flat screen.

That was very spooky when the cast-off blessing got cut off before it was over.

The Hillstrands' mother's dream was also freaky...

I don't know if they're try to create some tension and drama right from the get-go, or they're setting up someting big that's gonna go down later in the season, but it's spooky.

The pods are marked and it's illegal to steal them. Not to mention that for most of these guys this is where they make most of their money for the entire year, and I imagine they wouldn't take that shit lying down. Besides, you may need another guy's boat to come save your ass from the sea someday.
