I watched some of the "best of season 3" last night. Some dude was climbing on the pots and fell in. Another boat was close by and picked him up. It was riveting television for sure. The captain of the boat that picked him up was freaked out ....

and to start this season she told him (and his brother) that she thought tragedy was going to strike them this year.... then the boys laughed and said she's been saying stuff like that for 20 years

finding the crab seems fairly simple. its a mix of history, weather patterns, and reports from other fishermen. theres plenty of science that goes into that of course. but the concept is simple enough.

i don't think crab fishing works that way anymore, especially when the first season of deadliest catch was the last season of derby fishing. these guys all leave port knowing exactly how much money they are coming home with and exactly how much crab they can catch. the only question they really have is how long its going to take to get it done. im sure they are secretive about exact locations and depths and the like from one another. but the captains all have far more detailed information about the area than what is released on tv.

this wouldn't be a whim type industry. you would not only need to get your hands on a boat, but you'd have to buy someones quota as well. alot of the big boats on the show not only fish for their quotas, but they purchase rights to smaller boats quotas as well and fish for them. catching the crab would likely be the easiest part of becoming a commercial king crab fisherman.

the middle diagram is reasonably accurate on how a crab pot works. bait is hung inside the trap, the crap moves into the pot via the funnel, then can't get back out/is preoccupied with the bait.

some do. many of the boats have partner boats who are allowed to haul their pots and take their crab. for boats that do not, doing so is very illegal. huge fines and other nastiness will follow if you pull someone elses pot.

the only question i have after watching the shows is how much the time bandit and cornelia marie are going to be fined for dumping the truck :p.

no way no how do they get anything resembling reception. so if he just wants to watch movies or something... there are a lot cheaper ways of getting it done. certainly less fragile ones at that. im just hoping he was smart enough to buy an lcd and not a plasma.
