DE Vernon Gholston (Official Thread)

Last night on HBO's Hard Knocks with the New York Jets, there was a moment in the episode that made me chuckle.

During a coaches meeting, apparently some of the Jets Defensive staff were trying to goad a fight between Robert Turner and Vernon Gholston, if only to try and light a fire under the kids rear end.

Ultimately - they decided against it. But it was funny to hear the coaches discussing it.
but then they show 30 seconds after that a small scuffle in which gholston yanks truner down...

It's uplifting to see Coach Ryan have so much confidence in Vernon's ability. I hope we see it translate on the field regardless what anyone says about 3-4 / 4-3 DE. Seems like a deserving kid with a lot of talent.

Improved Gholston volunteered to take pay cut

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Most Jets fans regard Vernon Gholston as something of a bust, but the biggest Jets fan, coach Rex Ryan , is in Gholston's corner. During the second episode of HBO 's "Hard Knocks" that aired Wednesday night, Ryan not only praised Gholston's progress but revealed the third-year player volunteered to take a pay cut to help the team sign free agents.

Gholston wasn't surprised by Ryan's remarks because the coach has been very encouraging about the change he's undergoing from outside linebacker to defensive end. But this season's voluntary pay cut had been kept under wraps until now.

"For me, it's all about the team," said Gholston, the sixth pick in 2008. "That's the most important thing. If we get a Super Bowl ring out of the deal, there's more in the world than money."

Gholston approached the Jets with his offer before the free-agency period began in March. "We did the deal," he said. "It was more of a restructuring for this year and for the future."

That Gholston now seems to have a future with the Jets almost comes as a shock. But Ryan's hybrid defense offers multiple ways to use someone with Gholston's combination of strength, speed and length.

The key to unlocking that talent, Ryan decided, was to determine whether Gholston possessed the mental toughness to play as physically as hoped. So Ryan urged offensive lineman Robert Turner to goad Gholston into a training-camp fight.

"I didn't feel like I was being set up,'' Gholston said. "Tempers get going. Hey, it's a dogfight. I'm a competitor. When you challenge me as a person, I'm going to do what's necessary. I try to leave fighting out of football and make it all business, but if that's what it takes, I'm going to do that.''

Vernon Gholston not offended by staged donnybrook: "I ain't scared of no fight."
By Manish Mehta

CHARLOTTE, NC - Vernon Gholston maintained that he wasn?t offended by being set him up to fight a couple weeks ago in Cortland. Rex Ryan and defensive coordinator Mike Pettine recently asked offensive lineman Rob Turner to pick a fight in practice with Gholston to light a fire under him. HBO cameras captured their plan on last week?s episode of Hard Knocks. Gholston said he didn?t know about the scheme until he watched the show.

?Fighting? We can do that if necessary,? the former first-round pick said after the Jets 9-3 win over the Panthers last night. ?But my job is always to try to become a better football player and try to help this team win?. They saw how I responded. I ain?t scared of no fight.?

Gholston, who is still looking for his first career sack, said the coaches? ploy was ?totally unexpected.?

?I don?t think it?s anything serious,? he said. ?I think it?s more so they?re sitting back and they had nothing else to do.?

Gholston has shown encouraging signs in his transition from outside linebacker to defensive end in the Jets? 3-4 base scheme. He had a team-high four tackles last night.

The former Ohio State standout also confirmed what Ryan revealed on Hard Knocks about his restructured contract. Gholston and his agent approached the Jets to restructure his five-year rookie deal (that included $21 million in guarantees). Although Ryan said on the show that Gholston took a ?pay cut,? that isn?t entirely accurate.

Gholston's base salary in 2010 actually increased from $1.9 million to $2.25 million. He also received an additional $4.25 million (signing bonus + workout bonus). Although the Jets will have to fork over $6.5 million this season, the appealing part of the re-worked deal for the team kicks in in 2011 when Gholston?s base salary drops to $550,000. At that point, the Jets can cut ties with the former first-rounder before paying out an additional $2.5 million roster bonus in March 2011. Gholston could conceivably earn $9 million in incentives in 2011. His base salary for 2012 is $650,000.

Gholston said that his decision to restructure his contract was linked to his perception of playing time this season.

?I just thought it was a good thing to do? with the hope of it giving me a better chance of more playing time,? Gholston said. ?At the same time, it?s all about winning a Super Bowl, really.?

Jets' DE Vernon Gholston has already been tested by opponents, coaches -- and he's passing

Vernon Gholston has been tested -- by both opponents and his coach -- already this season. So far, he's passing.

Late in the second quarter of Saturday night?s preseason game, Carolina?s starters were still on the field, but the Jets? reserve defenders had rotated in. That put Vernon Gholston ? after two fruitless seasons at outside linebacker ? lined up at right defensive end on second-and-10.

Gholston said he anticipated the blocking scheme and attacked the tight end. He shed him to the ground and promptly wrapped up running back Tyrell Sutton for a loss of a yard.

?The gap opened up,? Gholston explained afterward, ?so it was right there for me to make the play.?

Making plays is what the 2008 first-round pick became known for not doing in two sackless seasons in the NFL. But the results were all over the field in the Jets? 9-3 win over the Panthers, as Gholston led the team with five tackles and two tackles for a loss in the second preseason contest.

While Rex Ryan steadily let praise of Gholston slip out during training camp, including guaranteeing him a roster spot in one press conference, this was a chance for Gholston to prove Ryan wasn?t bluffing.

?I thought he did a lot of good things,? Ryan said. ?And it?s been what we?ve been seeing. So, no surprises.?

Gholston Is Confident the Wait Is Finally Over
By GREG BISHOP
Published: August 28, 2010

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. ? At the beginning of his third N.F.L. season, Vernon Gholston has never felt so comfortable, aggressive, primed. When he acknowledged that late Friday, though, he leaned forward, eyes on his locker. He spoke firmly, but also sheepishly, as if he wanted to knock on wood.

This is not Gholston?s first trip down the avenue of expectations so far unfilled. He was the sixth overall pick in the 2008 N.F.L. draft, a nonfactor through two seasons, a college defensive end turned outside linebacker turned back into a defensive lineman in the spring.

Each year, the Jets predicted Gholston would break out ? including this one. He has rewarded the franchise with 30 tackles ? in two seasons.

Still, all parties think (again) that this year will be different, that the beast that seems so obvious in Gholston?s frame, with biceps that look like swollen grapefruit and a torso that resembles an oversize V, will finally emerge.

?I?ve got momentum,? Gholston said. ?Now, it?s about putting it all together.?
