CORTLAND -- You've heard this before, but Vernon Gholston is coming on strong in training camp.

If you prefer to not hold your breath for the 2008 No. 1 draft pick who has played two years in the NFL and still doesn't have a sack, so be it. But coach Rex Ryan and even some of Gholston's defensive teammates were gushing about his progress yesterday.

"That's the best day he's had since I've been here," Ryan said of yesterday's practice. "I want to see him string some together. This is the most excited I've ever been about Vernon Gholston. Whatever he had for breakfast [yesterday], he needs to eat [more]. That was big time.

"I thought it would happen last year," Ryan said. "But it was a coaching mistake. We put him now in a role where he can be more successful quicker. This is more of a natural role for him."

Ryan, indicating that he should have moved Gholston from linebacker to defensive end last season, called keeping Gholston at linebacker last year "a coach's mistake."

"I think this is the best camp that he's had since he's been here," Jets defensive tackle Kris Jenkins said of Gholston. "He's picking his motor up and he's definitely working harder. I think he's getting comfortable with the plays.

"I'm starting to realize what Vernon's issues have been: Vernon's issue is when he's not really comfortable in the defensive scheme he gets a little tentative. Now he's starting to relax and have confidence in what's going on and he's starting to crank his motor up and it's about time."

Rex Ryan: 'This is the most excited I've ever been about Vernon Gholston'
By Manish Mehta

CORTLAND - Rex Ryan has pumped up Vernon Gholston in the past, but the Jets coach seems convinced now that the underachieving first-round pick is ready for a breakthrough.

?That?s the best day he?s had since I?ve been here,? Ryan said after the morning practice today. ?I want to see him string some together? This is the most excited I?ve ever been about Vernon Gholston?. Whatever he had for breakfast, he needs to eat (more). That was big time.?

Gholston stood out during a 5-on-4 drill between both lines.

?He stood up (offensive lineman) Wayne Hunter,? Ryan said. ?He jacked him up?

Although there?s plenty of room for improvement -- Ryan admitted the former Ohio State star needs to get off the block better -- the coaches have seen some improvement in the outside linebacker-turned-defensive end. Ryan took responsibility for not moving to the end last season.

?I thought it would happen last year,? Ryan said. ?But it was a coaching mistake. We put him now in a role where he can be more successful quicker. This is more of a natural role for him.?

Even the coach blames the coaches and not Gholston. And it's part of what I've been saying ? OSU coaches knew years ago his best spot was DE, but the pros "knew better." Kind of funny with all the arrogant comments in this thread protecting their precious coach. lmao.

He isn't a 3-4 DE either. Don't expect much production just because he's putting his hand in the ground now. I think his breakout season comes once he signs with a 4-3 team in free agency.

Finally he back where belongs. Seen plenty of success moving a Linebacker to DE but never a DE to Linebaker.....about fricking time....Be afraid QB's be very afraid!

Terrell Suggs? Peter Boulware? Brian Okrapo? LeMaar Woodley? That guy named Mike Vrabel has had a decent career...some might call it a "success."

Good examples - but that rearrangement of Orakpo's name doesn't help your case, phonetically speaking.

By this point of the game I wasn't watching very closely but I tried to watch and see how Vern was doing. He looked better. There were a few times he got by the blocker and put some pressure on the qb and then there would be times he'd get by the blocker but the play was already up field. I swear I think he caused a fumble in that game but it wasn't credited to him.

Again, I wasn't watching very close but he still seems a bit off. Like either he's trying too hard or just thinking too much and ends up being out of position.

Last night on HBO's Hard Knocks with the New York Jets, there was a moment in the episode that made me chuckle.

During a coaches meeting, apparently some of the Jets Defensive staff were trying to goad a fight between Robert Turner and Vernon Gholston, if only to try and light a fire under the kids rear end.

Ultimately - they decided against it. But it was funny to hear the coaches discussing it.
