DE Vernon Gholston (Official Thread)

Big Vern climbing the ladder & drawing interest from the 'phins at #1?

Our sources also told us the Miami Dolphins, at this point, are ruling out using a the first overall pick on a quarterback. Simply put, they are not yet convinced any quarterbacks are worthy of being picked first overall. Nonetheless, we've been told Bill Parcells and Jeff Ireland really like Joe Flacco and Chad Henne, who could be selected later in the draft....all this talk has led our source to believe that Miami is looking at Chris Long vs Vernon Gholston, if they keep the number one pick. Gholston, who reminds many N.F.L. scouts of Shawn Merriman, could actually inch ahead of Long, if he has a great workout in Indy.

Ohio State's Vernon Gholston, one of the top defensive ends heading into the NFL Draft, shares his thoughts about the Scouting Combine. Check back tomorrow for another update.

As you read this, I am on my way to Indianapolis for the NFL Scouting Combine. It is the first step on the road to get where I've wanted to be for a long time, and that's in professional football.

Maybe I should back up, because there was a step before the Combine. Although losing to LSU in the national championship game was a disappointment, I decided to leave Ohio State after my junior year and turn pro. I love Ohio State and playing for the Buckeyes has been a great experience, but this is what I need to do now for my family and for myself. So, I left Columbus and went to Tempe, Ariz., where I have been working out daily at Athletes' Performance Institute, a facility that helps guys get ready for the Combine and for the NFL.

Gholston is believed to be a 'late riser' in the draft.

Combine begins stretch run for prospects looking to step up
By Pat Kirwan

... many teams could instead opt for a late riser like Ohio State's Vernon Gholston, who has the versatility and athleticism to play with his hand down as a 4-3 defensive end or play outside linebacker in a 3-4 alignment. He also has 22 sacks in two years.

From Fiutak's comments on the combine.

Vernon Gholston

Everyone saw him rip apart Michigan last year, but there were too many games when he was a non-factor. Even so, with great speed and quickness, he stands out in a good field of promising pass rushers. At least that's the prevailing belief going into Indy. The 40 time doesn't matter too much, but he has to show a big burst in the short runs and agility drills. Is he physical enough? A good showing on the bench could assure a top ten spot, possibly around five to seven.

Ohio State defensive end Vernon Gholston is moving up, as is Virginia's Chris Long....But Auburn's Quentin Groves is really causing a stir here. He met with 49ers' head coach Mike Nolan and told him your going to be sorry you traded the 7th pick for Staley after I run a 4.4 forty! Big Talk, but if he does he will be a top 10 pick for sure.
looks like he was smart to attend the combine :p

Ohio State's Vernon Gholston, one of the top defensive ends heading into the NFL Draft, shares his thoughts about the Scouting Combine.

Part of what NFL teams will be looking at when they assess me is what position I'll play. At Ohio State, I was a defensive end, though sometimes I played down in a three-point stance and sometimes I stood up, like a linebacker. I played at about 260 pounds in college and weigh a little more than that now.

I don't have a strong preference about how I am used. I think I'm strong enough to play as a down lineman and I have some speed, too. I'm not real eager to compare myself to an NFL player, because those guys have accomplished a lot that I haven't. But other people have said I'm like Colts defensive end Dwight Freeney. That is a high compliment. We are about the same weight, though I'm about 3 inches taller. I sometimes hear I might be like Shawne Merriman or DeMarcus Ware. Those are good goals to shoot for.

Gholston has entered the room

February 23, 2008 12:00 PM

A buzz just went through the room when Ohio State defensive end Vernon Gholston arrived on the main stage. Two reporters almost knocked each other down jokeying for position.

Gholston just told Hashmarks that he checked in at 6-3, 266 pounds. He's wearing a gray sweatshirt with the words "DL22" written on it. Gholston absolutely wore out Michigan tackle Jake Long in their matchup this past season.

He's been compared to Shawne Merriman and DeMarcus Ware. He has a lot different body type than Ware, who was tall and lean when he first came out of Troy. OK, one of my neighborhood kids, Frank Okam, just walked in. I have to go talk to him.

Ohio State DE Vernon Gholston spoke to the media this afternoon after measuring in at 6-foot-3, 266-pounds. He was asked why he decided to leave Ohio State and said that even though he left early, he was at Ohio State for four years (redshirted his first year) and felt that it was his time. Gholston said he was going to participate in a full workout and when asked about his expectations for his bench press he responded, "I expect to get at least 35 (reps)."

Ohio State's Gholston would fit with Ravens with 8th pick

Kiper: drafting pass rusher makes sense

By AARON WILSON Landmark News Service
Published February 23, 2008
OWINGS MILLS - The NFL is like most high-profile corporations with virtually nothing done in a vacuum, ignored or not eventually imitated as the highest form of flattery.
That's why it won't be a surprise this spring when a ripple effect is expected to transpire as a reaction to how the New York Giants won the Super Bowl. The Giants dismantled the previously-undefeated New England Patriots behind a fierce pass rush on quarterback Tom Brady.A heavy run on defensive linemen is anticipated.
Six defensive ends are projected as first-round picks. Two defensive tackles are tabbed for the top 10. And Virginia defensive end Chris Long is a strong candidate to be picked first overall by the Miami Dolphins.
"I think it's a copy-cat league," ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. said during a conference call. "Ray Lewis pointed out how the formula for beating the Patriots is to get pressure on Tom Brady. That's what Rex Ryan preaches, not playing soft and passive, and taking your chances in coverage by attacking upfront.
"It's great to say you want to do that, but it's another thing to have a Michael Strahan, an Osi Umenyiora and a Justin Tuck. Not many teams have a Umenyiora as a pass rusher. That's one thing the Ravens have to improve."

Gholston is Vrabel-like
By John Tomase
Sunday, February 24, 2008

INDIANAPOLIS - Not only have the Patriots [team stats] failed to draft a linebacker in the first round since coach Bill Belichick arrived in Foxboro, they haven?t even taken one on the first day.

If that track record is to change, then a player to keep an eye on is Ohio State defensive end/linebacker Vernon Gholston, who has drawn favorable comparisons to another No. 50 and former Buckeyes great - the Patriots? Mike Vrabel.

Gholston owns a number of attributes that fit the Pats? system perfectly. The 6-foot-3, 266-pounder arrived at college as a linebacker, switched to defensive end and graduated as a drop end, rushing the quarterback and falling back into coverage with equal skill.

There are some who believe he could become a Vrabel type in the NFL. Gholston doesn?t disagree.

?Yeah, I think I could,? Gholston said. ?Obviously, he made the Pro Bowl this year. That?s one of my goals for the future. We come from similar backgrounds, Ohio State, similar positions.?

OSU's Vernon Gholston a hot draft commodity

INDIANAPOLIS - If the Browns are going to dream on their return flight to Cleveland from the NFL Scouting Combine, they might as well dream big.

One of the top pass rushers in the draft April 26 is Ohio State defensive end Vernon Gholston. Today he is as far out of the Browns reach as the moon because he is projected as a top-seven pick and the Browns' first pick is 56th overall. But things can change.

No matter the position, Gholston gets his sacks
Ohio State star says he likes defensive end but can play linebacker if a team wants.

INDIANAPOLIS ? Some NFL scouts see him as a pure end in a 4-3 defense.

Others envision him as an outside linebacker in the 3-4 scheme.

Everybody agrees: Ohio State's Vernon Gholston is a pass rusher ready to devour NFL quarterbacks for lunch at 1 o'clock on Sundays.

Playing the "Leo" or rush end position, Gholston set a Buckeyes single-season record with 14 sacks for minus-111 yards in 2007.

"I did 'em both in college," he said at the NFL Scouting Combine on Saturday, Feb. 23. "It's really wherever the team puts me. The biggest thing is I'm capable of playing both positions."

INDIANAPOLIS ? Seen and overheard at the NFL Scouting Combine on Saturday, Feb. 23:

Ohio State defensive end Vernon Gholston stole the show. His size (6-foot-3, 266 pounds), appearance and intelligence have scouts drooling. "The way he handled himself in interviews, he's a very smart guy," one scout said. "Everybody's impressed with him."

Gholston's versatility offers many NFL possibilitiesby CHRIS STEUBER, Scout.com
Updated: February 24, 2008

In the world of Astrology the Leo is considered the most dominant of all the zodiac characters. They know exactly what they want and use all of their energy, creativeness and resolution to get it, as well as being certain that they will get whatever they are after.

Ohio State's versatile defender Vernon Gholston isn't a Leo by birth date, but he played the Leo position with the Buckeyes and his objective was to sack the quarterback.

The Leo position at Ohio State is a defender who plays with his hand down in the ground and lines up at outside linebacker. This is an important attribute that will only help Gholston's draft stock this April and it will make him more attractive to NFL teams.

At the NFL Scouting Combine, the 6-foot-3, 266-pound Gholston addressed his versatility and what position he prefers to play at the next level.

"I'm not really uncomfortable with either one of them; I played them both (DE and OLB) in college," Gholston said. "It's really wherever the team puts me. The biggest thing is I'm capable of playing both positions. Actually, I played linebacker in high school, so when I got to Ohio State the biggest adjustment was becoming a defensive end; playing with my hand on the ground.
