DE Vernon Gholston (Official Thread)

I know, but that doesn't mean it's the smartest move. If you're projected top 5 or even top 10...you have nothing to gain and a lot to lose.
He's more of a potential top-5/10 guy than a lock for such...

Unless they ask him defend against the run, his stock should be fine :p

Vern is getting great advice. As someone who watches much of the combine, when they interview manangement of the different teams they seem annoyed when players don't work out.

Not only that, but with Miami, New York, New England in the top 10 and them using a 3-4 and that 3-4 OLB being Gholston's projected pro position , he pretty much is a lock for the top 10.

Not that I think he'll even be there at #9, but with the Bengals probably losing Justin Smith to FA, I can't imagine Cincy going any other direction if Vern would somehow slip thru...but like I said I have little hope that he'll make it to #9 before being selected.

You guys aren't getting it. He is already projected from top 5-10 spots. I don't care how much he benches or how fast he runs, he isn't going to go ahead of Dorsey, McFadden, Long, etc...

However, he could easily hurt himself if he were to get injured or not have a good day in the drills. All of these GM's who might act upset if he didn't workout will not pass on him if he is there at their pick. He'd be smart to show up and interview, then go home and wait to get paid.

Not sure why Big Vern is going to work out at the combine since he's pretty much a lock to go top 10.
Well, someone on the outside of the situation can only speculate...therefore I'll do exactly that. It seems plausible that Gholston right now is a tenuous top 10 (or top 5, pick your poison) selection, and that he and his camp feel that his measurables will most likely get him more firmly entrenched in that range. In other words, his raw athletic capacity quite possibly outstrips his on-field production (even though the latter is appreciable), and thus it will benefit him to show his wares on the scales, on the track, and in the weight room.

IMO, Gholston is a lock to be top 7, even with a subpar combine, as I feel that there is no chance in hell he falls past the Patriots. However, with an incredible combine, of which he is certainly capable, he could move himself up as high as number 2. The difference in dollars for that kind of a jump is worth the minor risk of injury. Gholston is a workout warrior, he will excel at the combine.

Very good point. In the top 10, even a slot or two can mean a million dollars or more in guarenteed $$.

Last year @ #9, Teddy Ginn got a 5 year deal that can max out at almost $22 mil. with $14 million guarenteed. At #7, AP got a 5 year deal that can max out @ $40-1/2 mil. with over $17 mil. guarenteed. Then @ #2 (some have said the Rams might be looking at Vern WalterFootball.com: 2008 NFL Mock Draft ) Calvin Johnson signed a 6 year deal that can max out at $64-1/2 mil. with over $27 mil. guarenteed.

I think that's worth the risk if you think it'll even potentially move you up a single slot.
