DE Vernon Gholston (Official Thread)

According to Heacocks quote it's Richardson and Wilson competing at one end spot and Gholston and Barrow competing for the other. Atleast, that's how I read it.

Coach T and Pittock also offered some high praise concerning Gholston.

Looks like Vernon has been getting noticed. From the Ozone:

ozone.quotebook

That will change beginning Saturday when the Buckeyes put on the pads for the first time. When they do, all eyes will be on the OSU defense, where the Buckeyes must replace nine starters from last year's team. OSU Head Coach Jim Tressel is one of those who will have more-than a passing interest in how the Buckeye defense looks starting that day, but Tressel sounded optimistic about the defensive side of the ball on OSU photo day.

"We've just had shoulder pads on for one day," he said.
"The two days in helmets they looked fast, in shoulder pads they looked fast, now when we get the full pads on Saturday we'll see if they can bend their knees and really play low and tackle," he said.

Though standouts are difficult to tab this early in the camp, there is one name that Tressel mentioned of a player who started making a move last spring and who his teammates think could make a big difference in OSU's defense.

"If you had to say which one catches your eye from a year ago, to me the one that has shown a lot is Vernon Gholston," Quinn Pitcock told me that if Vernon can keep playing the way he's been playing we've got a chance, and I agree with him," said Tressel.

Saw Vernon's pic on the O-zone site. Man! He's looks like a beast! If he plays as well as he looks, I feel sorry for the sucker that gotta block him, and the QB thats gotta absorb his hit!!!

Vernon has the makings of a very solid year

Physically, I don't know if I've seen someone more capable. Now Heacock suggests he's come along farther than any other he's coached...this would seem to indicate that the mental part is coming together. VG is fast and has more than enough size. If someone like VG can be disruptive on the outside, this will make our inexperience in the back 7 a bit less concerning.

Is it wrong for me to hope he does?

I dont think it is to be honest with ya. Richardson has been known as an underachiever in his tenure with the Bucks. There was a write up in the Dispatch last year absout him looking to have a breakout Junior season and shedding the "underachiever" label. I think Richardson is a better backup than he is a starter. I would rather have Wilson and Gholston as our starting DEs.
