DE Vernon Gholston (Official Thread)

Couple of points

1-Given his performance in the All-Star games, I think Barrow would be more likely than Gholston not to RS. I think one RS's, the other does not.

2-As far as speed #'s go-there is another post on here that shows the official OSU records for 40 times. At LB, Courtland Bullard ran a 4.44-the "Big Speed" category. At the "Power" category, Marcel Frost ran a 4.7 something. I doubt Gholston is faster than either of those guys. If a kid runs under 4.5 in HS, he has some amazing wheels-whether he is a WR,DB, RB, or LB. Personally, if it wasn't timed at a school camp, I would not believe the #.

Well you know its not like I'm making his 40 time up to impress, but going based on his number in Rivals or Insiders it says he's ran a 4.5? So actually he's indeed faster than Frost but not faster than bullard. However With him being a Defensive End and not a linebacker his competition is not Bullard. However he's only 1 tenth of a second behing him as well. Which IMO is very very impressive. I'm just going by the numbers man but in all honestly I expect him to Redshirt like you said, but for only two reasons. He's raw, and doesn't have the technique nor the experience. Maybe Frost is faster but you know just going on the number on the internet Gholston's a bit faster than frost. I just went and checked he's up to 250 pounds now, and he was timed at the OSU camp 4.5 .

I hope they both can RS this year.

I also agree that Barrow will be the first to hit the field he is farther along as a football player but Gholston may end up the better player.

Anyone remember what Will Smith ran for the pro scouts?
A la the 'Nawlins Times-Picayune, which most of you fanatics have probably already linked to via BN.

"Smith clocked a time of 4.58 in the 40-yard dash during his workout for scouts this spring. The time was the best of any defensive end in the draft and one of the fastest ever recorded for a defensive lineman."

If Gholston's listed # of 4.5 is close to reality, there could be trouble.

I think that his 40 time was slightly fabricated, regardless we have landed one hell of an athlete. I anticipate him to slow down a touch as he beefs up, but look for him to really become a force. He reminds me alot of Kudla.

I was listening to herbie and fitz on 1460 the fan today and they were talking AJ Hawk and Anthony Shlegal. They asked the ? who they thought could see the feild most as a freshman and AJ quickly answered Vernon Gholston. He said something along the lines of when he forst saw him he thought he was a 30 something year old coach. Did anyone else hear this interview? It was pretty entertaining.

According to Coach Heacock, Gholston is running with the ones now. Out of all the news guys out on the field, I'm the most excited about seeing what he can do.

Interesting.

I wonder if he took Wilsons or Richardsons spot?

Wilson's. According to Heacock Wilson is backing up Richardson at one spot while Barrow is backing up Gholston at the other. That's a pretty badass rotation at end.

Edit: actually on second look, it's not exactly clear who is starting and who is backing up between Wilson and Richardson, obviously nothing is in cement yet and there will be continuing competition for the starting spot.

Taken from Heacock article on BN front page:

“He [Lawrence Wilson] and Jay (Richardson) are playing the same spot and they are pushing each other." Then, we have Vernon Gholston and Alex Barrow at the other end spot.”

It looks as if Wilson/Richardson are battling for one starting spot and Gholston/Barrow for the other.

Wilson was apparently injured, so that's why Gholston was "running with the ones".
Players in no-contact yellow jerseys included FB Ryan Franzinger, LB Mark Johnson (out with a shoulder injury), LB Austin Spitler, LB Ross Homan (hamstring) and DE Lawrence Wilson.
