Gholston leading OSU's sack brigade
BY JON SPENCER | THE MANSFIELD NEWS JOURNAL

Vernon Gholston was kicked off his high school team for not being tough enough.

This should re-define the meaning of taking something personal.

Junior happy to lead charge OSU defensive end Gholston transforms into a force on the field
By George M. Thomas Beacon Journal sportswriter
Published on Friday, Nov 09, 2007
COLUMBUS: Ohio State junior defensive end Vernon Gholston allowed himself a rare moment of self-indulgence this past week.
Gholston, a 6-foot-3, 260-pound native of Detroit, is known for being self-effacing and, in some respects, soft spoken. It wouldn't be such a contradiction if he didn't play one of the most fearsome positions on the football field like the Incredible Hulk of comic book fame.
An All-America candidate, Gholston turns into a rampaging beast with one goal: getting to the quarterback or whoever is holding the football.
It served him well last week against Wisconsin, when Gholston morphed into a one-man wrecking crew and sacked Badgers quarterback Tyler Donovan four times and disrupted the passer's timing on several other plays. OSU has 37 sacks this season; Gholston has 10.

Gholston is going home; Junior from Michigan having stellar season
Friday, November 16, 2007

COLUMBUS With arms as big as an Ann Arbor oak, Vernon Gholston doesn?t get harassed much back home. Ohio State?s defensive end, the one who could leave for the NFL after the junior season he?s having, is one of two Buckeyes from Michigan.

?They?re happy for me,? Gholston said. ?The other side of it is we have a winning record against them, so there?s not much they can say. ... We?re 3-0 against Michigan, so I guess I have that going for me.

?If guys do say stuff about it, I guess they do it behind my back.?

Gholston, who went to a Cass Technical High School in Detroit, came down to a choice between Ohio State and Michigan. It was an easy decision.

?You try to figure out where you fit in and the team you want to be a part of,? Gholston said. ?I looked at the national championship game in 2002 as a big factor. Ohio State was the best team in the nation, and they were not going to lose that game. That was big in my eyes.

?Plus, just the kind of man (Head Coach) Jim Tressel is. That trickles down to the rest of the program.?
