DE Noah Spence (Official Thread)

I would think even if he wins the appeal, the plan would be for him to come back next season anyways after a series of checkpoints with the coaches. From a practical standpoint, no way he would even be ready for the playoffs/bowl game from a football conditioning perspective.

I don't know. even if he can play only 10-20 snaps per game on obvious passing downs, why not? it's not like burning a redshirt. he loses this year of eligibility regardless, so why not get at least a little use out of it?

Just so I understand, when we say Spence could be back for the last three games, we are talking Wisconsin, Alabama, Florida State - right?
I think he was the one who said the last 3 games. there's been a whole lot of speculation as to what that means. and it may be just rosy optimism. it's an appeal. so OSU could present his appeal and the response may be, "Denied." and that would be that.

I'm just waiting for Winston's hearing to get pushed after the ACC CG (just a few more days)... and then for Winston to withdraw from school Sunday evening once the playoff results have been announced.

Think there's much higher chance Winston plays in January than Spence though.

I must say, the Spence situation from the small, tiny bit I know about it seems like another example of expert handling by this staff. And I hardly even mean football wise at all. If I had a son that was a top recruit I would want him under the care of Urban Meyer. Period. And that would be the answer if he wasn't at The Ohio State too. I think that's why Stacy Elliot as an example, is willing to talk to recruits and their parents like he does. Again, that's from my limited perspective. I've just gained a lot of respect for how Urban and his staff handle these young men. He doesn't just kick them to the curb but also doesn't let them off the hook. That's what kills me about people talking bad about Urban in the context of players in the past who have had transgressions. Urban won't bail out on a kid because you wouldn't do that to your own family but, like a family you will be quick to hand out real, fair punishment when warranted. Just look at the Roby and Hyde situation last year and compare it to the handling of players by a few other programs this year. Enough said.

I hope there has been real progress in Noah's life. I feel confident in saying this staff has provided him every opportunity to get well. I am hopefully that his appeal has legitimacy to it that only comes from an obvious turn around. The huge shock to me about this whole thing was the fact that it happened to Noah of all guys. Just proves it can happen to anyone. When Urban said it was like a sucker punch I completely took that from the perspective of a friend/mentor to Noah being hurt to learn about the depth of the situation, not a perspective of a coach losing a star player. Maybe I have scarlet colored glasses but it certainly seems that way to me.

Rant about Urban and the staff aside, I'm hoping this appeal has merit because Noah can show he is truly in a better place. Buckeye.

That's a really good point and I would agree if he gets the rust off quick. I know he has been working out but can he step right back in and hardly miss a step, even with no responsibility except get to the QB? I tend to think with a baller like Noah that he would come back as an instant shot in the arm for the pass rush. Either way, it way be nice to have him back on the team even if it is not for The Game or Wisconsin...if we make the playoffs (or even if it is just a bowl game), he would have nearly a month to acclimate himself to the scheme and shake that rust off with bowl practices.

At the very least, it obviously seems like there is some gray area here and he isn't going to get the permanent ban it seemed like he was going to get by rule after his 2nd offense. You'd have to think that even if he doesn't get reinstated this year he will be able to play next year, which is going to make the 2015 ballclub even better than it looks now.

Ruled permanently ineligible by the B1G.
