Euclid's Gibson: OSU, not UM

Tuesday, January 24, 2006 Eddie Dwyer

Plain Dealer Reporter
Thaddeus Gibson didn't start playing football until the ninth grade. Basketball was definitely his first love.
After some encouragement from Euclid football coach Mike Rezzolla and his coaching staff, Gibson decided to apply many of his basketball skills -- speed, strength, quickness and nose for the ball -- to the gridiron.
By the start of his junior season, the 6-3, 220-pounder developed into one of the most coveted high school football players in the nation.
Gibson, who still excels in basketball for the Panthers, continued the Northeast Ohio pipeline to Columbus on Monday morning by orally committing to play for Jim Tressel and the Fiesta Bowl champion Ohio State Buckeyes. Signing day is Feb. 1.
"It's a great environment with great football," Gibson said after choosing Ohio State over Michigan and Tennessee. "My family and coaches are very happy for me."
Gibson's family played a big role in his football development as his mom, Gwendolyn, and older brother, Rafeale, timed him every night before his junior season -- "to see how fast I could run around the corner."
A two-time Plain Dealer "Best of the Best" All-Star selection and a two-time Division I All-Ohio honoree, Gibson spent the past two seasons running down opposing ball carriers and quarterbacks. An outside linebacker, he totaled 46 solo tackles last fall, including 10 sacks and eight other stops behind the line of scrimmage. Gibson also had 24 quarterback hurries.
Recruited by the Buckeyes as an outside linebacker, Gibson said Tressel's ability to attract other area standouts was a major factor in his decision.
"When we made our official visits, Rob Rose [Glenville], Ray Small [Glenville], Chris Wells [Akron Garfield] and I talked about developing a real family atmosphere," he said.

<table align="right" border="0" cellpadding="4" cellspacing="0"><tbody><tr><td>
</td></tr></tbody></table>Family and friends are important to Euclid linebacker Thaddeus Gibson, and the senior will have plenty of both surrounding him when he continues his football career at Ohio State.
Gibson made his verbal commitment to play for the Buckeyes on Monday, ending a lengthy recruiting process that was narrowed down to OSU, Tennessee and Michigan.
The final decision came down to Ohio State and Tennessee, but Gibson's comfort level in Columbus, his familiarity with current players and fellow members of the incoming freshman recruiting class, and his family's input helped lead the way to the scarlet and gray.
"It's a great atmosphere and not too far from home, and I am really excited to get the chance to play at Ohio State," Gibson said. "I was talking with (Euclid grad and current Buckeye) Brandon (Smith), Teddy (Ginn), Troy (Smith), (Glenville recruit) Robert Rose and (Akron Garfield recruit) Chris Wells and we all are looking forward to playing together.
"Brandon is a big role model and was like a big brother to me at Euclid, and he has let me know how things are down there. And my mom and brother are relocating to Columbus, so that is a big thing for me too."
The two-time All-Ohioan, who only started playing football in the ninth grade, said he pretty much knew when Ohio State offered him a scholarship that Columbus is where he wanted to be, but he took his time and gave the other schools a fair chance.
Gibson said the more Tennessee pursued, the more he liked the Volunteers and gave thought to playing in the SEC. Ultimately, Ohio State was more appealing than Knoxville.
"I sat down and came up with the conclusion that if I were to suffer a major injury and couldn't play football, where would I feel most comfortable just going to school?" Gibson said. "I think the whole situation at Ohio State is going to be great, and I can't wait to get down there, work my tail off and try to get on the field."
Gibson, rated as the No. 3 senior in Ohio and in the top 100 nationally by several publications, had eight sacks, 14 QB hurries, caused three fumbles and had 10 tackles for loss last season while helping Euclid make the Division I playoffs.
As a junior, Gibson put himself on the national recruiting radar by collecting 40 solo tackles, 17 tackles for loss, 12 sacks, 16 QB hurries, two interceptions, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.
With the decision finalized and the recruiting process finished, Gibson said he can now relax more than he has in a long time.
"I feel light, like it's crazy the weight is off my shoulders," Gibson said. "This is a great move for me. No more late-night phone calls."
The 6-foot-3, 210-pound speedster said the coaches are looking forward to seeing him put his quickness on display at OSU. Gibson, however, realizes he needs to add some weight to his muscular frame and said he will get in the weight room immediately after basketball season. OSU coaches want Gibson to play at about 230 pounds.
While the Buckeyes' incoming recruiting class has several highly regarded linebackers - including Mark Johnson from Los Angeles and Ross Homan from Coldwater in southwest Ohio - Gibson said he is looking forward to making a push to get on the field as a freshman.
"I think it is going to make me a better player," Gibson said of the competition at linebacker.
"I just can't believe I am going to be officially a Buckeye. It is most definitely an exciting time for me. It is overwhelming."

While the commitment of Thaddeus Gibson yesterday gives Ohio State possibly the strongest group of linebackers in the nation this recruiting season, he also might have blown Ray Small’s cover.

Gibson, of Euclid, said he was looking forward not only to reuniting with former teammate Brandon Smith at OSU, but Cleveland Glenville’s "Robert Rose and Ray Small are coming down, too."

While Rose, a defensive end, already had announced for Ohio State, Small, a receiver, was hoping to wait until letterof-intent signing day Feb. 1.
"You better let him make his own announcement," Gibson said, catching himself. "I do know he likes Ohio State."

Small, who has made no secret of that while continuing to assert Southern California was still in the running, could not be reached for comment. But his committment would put three Glenville players in this class, including lineman Bryant Browning, and they’d join four other Tarblooders already at OSU.

OSU’s 19 th commitment, Gibson (6 feet 2, 215 pounds), is considered the nation’s No. 9 linebacker prospect by Scout.com. Also in this class are No. 12 Mark Johnson of Los Angeles, No. 14 Ross Homan of Coldwater and No. 23 Ty Moeller of Colerain.

"You will be hard-pressed to find a better group of linebackers in any recruiting class in the country, which is important because it is also Ohio State’s biggest need," said Rivals.com analyst Bill Kurelic, noting the Buckeyes lost starters A.J. Hawk, Anthony Schlegel and Bobby Carpenter. "Ohio State has hit a home run, a grand slam, really."

it's a fun idea, but these guys look like caricatures. Wells needs to be in JWells' body. And Gibson's head is enormous! He looks like a man child, in the literal sense of the word. Reminds me of lil penny.
