DE/LB Thaddeus Gibson (official thread)

Merih;1667293; said:
I think that before his position change that he could easily have cracked 4.5. He got slower as he added weight for the defensive line, but kept his burst and closing speed enough to be a demon off the edge.

I'm sure he'll post in the low 4.5s at the Pro Day and earn himself a first round grade.

I hope your right...most mocks don't even have him going in the first 3 rounds which i think is insane. If he left to be a 3rd or 4th rounder, that will be very disappointing.

Gibson fared better. He put up 32 repetitions of 225 pounds on the bench - tied for sixth among defensive linemen. Yesterday, he posted a 4.71-second time in the 40-yard dash, about middle of the pack for defensive ends.

Gibson had said he wanted to run in the 4.6 range.

Did he ever look anywhere close to a 4.4 guy to you, shaker?

Maybe he flirts with 4.49 (4.55-4.59 would leave room for hopes) on OSU's notoriously fast track, but he's not close to that kind of speed in Indy.

I was initially commenting on the statement that he wanted to be around 4.4s even if I thought it was a stretch, which i did, it is surprising to see 4.7+

Risers & Sliders: Hybrid DE-LBs shine on Day 5 of NFL Combine
By Tony Pauline, Special to SI.com, TFYDraft.com

OSU's Thadeus Gibson showed great athleticism in drills, while Bama's Terrence Cody continued to disappoint.

INDIANAPOLIS -- On Monday, it was the defensive linemen and linebackers' turn to take the field at the NFL Scouting Combine. The performances on the field ranged from outstanding to awful.

Risers
Thadeus Gibson/DE-OLB/Ohio State: Gibson also completed 32 reps on the bench after tipping the scales at 243. His 40 times ranged in the low-to-mid 4.7 area. Gibson really showed his stuff during the practice session. He was terrific in all the defensive line drills and looked incredibly athletic. Then, like many of the players who worked out this morning, Gibson was put through a battery of linebacker drills and was brilliant. There's little doubt that the college defensive end has the talent to make the immediate transition to outside linebacker in the NFL.

Ohio State's Thaddeus Gibson looked smooth and comfortable dropping into coverage, which came as little surprise given how often he dropped into coverage in college. However, his footwork was a little sloppy during lateral bag work.

Gibson is so explosive that his momentum often carried him past the bag and forced him to gather himself before redirecting. We've seem this on film as well, and Gibson needs to play more under control.

Ohio State's Thaddeus Gibson often dropped into coverage for the Buckeyes, so it comes as no surprise that he displayed good footwork through the bags and opened his hips smoothly throughout position-specific drills. Gibson is undersized at 6-2 and 243 pounds, but his upper-body power was on display when he hoisted 32 reps on the standard 225-pound bench press.

Gibson is raw as a pass-rusher and open-field tackler, but few hybrid DE/OLB prospects in this class are blessed with as much natural ability, which is why he will be gone in the first two rounds.

Thad was never going to be a 4.5 guy. He was a good athlete but was never a speed demon off the edge. I'd say he showed about the same speed as laurinaitis at osu.

Disagree. Thad wasn't going to improve his stock much by returning. He will be a mid-round pick and wanted to start his professional career. I can't fault guys who have put in 4 years and don't want to miss their opportunity.
I really hope someone credible mocks the Vernon gholston comparisons. They are lazy and foolish.

Thad is most valuable as a stand-up versatile rush lb. He would be out of the league in 18 months or less if a team tried to use him as a 4-3 end.

Vern is the complete opposite. He is a man-child who tests well but on film is not effective in space other than as an element of surprise. He is wasted in a 3-4.

Obviously the comparisons are founded solely on the fact that both went to OSU. Other than that it's just stupid.

The 4.7 doesn't matter... it's his ability to change directions. He'll run in the high 4.5's at OSU anyways. The 3 cone and the Shuttle are more important for Thad and he did really well there.

I think Thad has the ability to be really really good in the Pro's and rack up a lot of sacks for some team.

NFL: Thaddeus Gibson's combine numbers look good
Published: Thursday, March 4, 2010

Thaddeus Gibson isn't sure what position he will play in the NFL.

Some teams are targeting him as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 defensive scheme and as a defensive end, his position the last two seasons at Ohio State.

Either way, the Euclid graduate and Ohio State product made an impression at the NFL scouting combine on Tuesday.

Gibson posted a time of 4.71 seconds in the 40-yard dash and 32 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press, an impressive amount considering Gibson weighs 250 pounds.

Those numbers only become that much more impressive if he's drafted as a linebacker.

"It's truly the position I love the most," Gibson told reporters at the combine. "I'm excited to hear the talk about me going back to linebacker, honestly, but I don't mind playing defensive end, either. I'm just excited about the opportunity and ready to go."

Gibson and the rest of the Buckeyes will host their pro day in Columbus on March 12. Also participating that day is Case Western Reserve quarterback and South grad Dan Whalen.

Ohio State OLB Thaddeus Gibson moved up two spots to No. 14. Before the Combine, pro scouts wondered if Gibson could make the transition from 4-3 DE in college to 3-4 OLB in the NFL. "He answered those questions at the Combine, looking explosive, quick, agile and athletic in all drills," Lande said. "More than a few scouts said he looked like he had been playing linebacker his whole life."

Ohio State?s Gibson moving up the draft board

By Carlos "Big C" Holmes | Wednesday, March 10, 2010

Former Ohio State defensive end Thaddeus Gibson was very impressive before scouts at the NFL Scouting Combine last month. Now the all-Big Ten performer on defense is looking to build on his performance at the school?s Pro Day on Friday, March 12.

Gibson is projected to come off the board in the second-round of April?s draft, but is like a man smoking at a gas station about to blow up. So it could be sooner rather than later.
gibson.jpg

Although the player had a good overall showing in Indianapolis, he seeks redemption in at least one area of his performance.

?I was happy with my overall performance at the combine, but feel I could have ran faster,? Gibson said during a phone interview. ?I know for a fact that I will run faster at pro day. I wasn?t happy with my 40 time. I?m anxious and excited I get to run again before NFL scouts. Friday can?t come fast enough.?

The 6-foot-2, 243-pound Gibson ran a 4.7 in the 40-yard dash but insists he can run in the mid 4.6 range. The player is hoping to accomplish that on Friday.

?I?m ready to showcase my skills at pro day,? he said. ?It?s all about a team falling in love with you. All you can do is go out there and perform. I?m excited to go out there and show them once again what I can do.?
NFL teams love Gibson?s versatility and have started to take notice of his ability on the field. He met with roughly 26 teams while in Indy. I?m told that the Cleveland Browns are one team who holds Gibson in high regard.
