I thought OSU played a large amout of 3-3-5 with a LB/Safety combo?

Plus he doesn't have $30 mil to get that nose tackle you need. There's not a whole lot of successful 3-4 defenses in the college ranks.
Now, is there anything wrong with Thad dropping back into coverage? No, but it will never truly be a 3-4 set.
Ohio State football: Thaddeus Gibson wants to seek and destroy

Don't move, or Thaddeus Gibson might destroy you.Thaddeus Gibson's plan for this season:
"Destroy everything moving."
That was Gibson's quote Tuesday.
Defensive coordinator Jim Heacock said Gibson is getting closer to being an every down defensive end, and that's what Gibson needs to be to reach the kind of stature Vernon Gholston achieved two seasons ago. It's great to rush the passer, but if you're on the sideline on running downs, you can't hit anybody.
"That's the place I'm shooting for, most definitely," Gibson said of a Gholston comparison. "I talk to Vern a lot and just picking his brain will help me also. That's definitely a goal for me."

Defensive end Thaddeus Gibson, chasing Illinois quarterback Juice Williams, led the Buckeyes with five sacks last season.
When Ohio State defensive coordinator Jim Heacock hears the beep - beep - beep of an incoming text message, he doesn't need three tries to guess who it's from.
"It's probably Thaddeus," Heacock said.
That's Thaddeus Gibson, a senior defensive end who leaped into the national consciousness in the Fiesta Bowl in January with his pass-rushing assault on Texas quarterback Colt McCoy.
"He texts me about every other hour, 'What can I do to become good?' " Heacock said.
OK, Heacock said he was exaggerating slightly on the frequency, but not the sincerity.
"He's really working hard to be as good as he can be," Heacock said.
His replies to Gibson have been consistent, also.
"He and I have talked a lot about the fact you can't just run up field and try to get sacks. You've got to play football," Heacock said. "It's one thing to just come off the edge and say, 'I'm going to go get a sack.' Then, they run the draw or run the ball and you're kind of out of position."
Gibson said he is trying not to waste any opportunity during spring practice this month.
"I want to become a better practice player because I know it pays off on the field," he said. "I want to learn the defense like it's the back of my hand."
