DE/LB Thaddeus Gibson (official thread)

What is the word on Thad? Saw Buckeye Commentary link to a rumor on the Ozone boards that he's left the team. The thread has been deleted, though. He wasn't at the game tonight. Anyone heard whats up there?

Exhale, he's fine.

Sometimes college kids don't make the best of decisions. Walking out when upset is one of those "in the heat of the moment" reactions. All we can hope is that he's learned from this and realizes what an asset to this team he is and will continue to be in the future.

Freshman linebacker Thaddeus Gibson didn't make the trip to West Lafayette, Ind., because, according to a source close to Gibson, he got into an argument with a defensive coach during practice last week. His punishment was missing this game. Gibson was frustrated over playing time as the Buckeyes worked on different defensive alignments.
"He lost his cool and blew up, and his temper got the best of him," said the source. "It's an important lesson about putting the team first that he has to learn from, and this is the beginning of a new week and he'll take it and move on."

Here are the more specific details from a solid source:

Thad was pissed he wasnt starting at the "viper" position this past week and walked off the practice field. The viper is the extra LB in the 3-4 we use. Grant started in his place this week....

Gibson made some nice plays at Minny the previous week. I was looking forward to his speed coming off the edge.

But the decision by the coaching staff to have him miss the Purdue game because of his outburst during practice is a lesson for him that the team must come first; and it's also something that every member of the team is aware of, and reinforces the 'team first' concept for everyone.

I concur with the coaching decision for the good of the team; to let someone play in such a situation can make it difficult for other players to tow the line in a lot of future situations.

I'll also look forward to a contrite, team-first Thad returning to make contributions.

Well, seeing as Grant is the starter when we're in standard 3-LB package that shouldn't come as a surprise to Gibson...

Man, one of the other LBs or team leaders needs to get in his ear immediately. He needs to know that he is a valuable player that will get his chances to contribute. He's got the ability to be a dominant player at that viper position and hopefully learns a little more patience going forward.

On the one hand we cannot help but admire a young man wanting to play and to contribute. Lots of them get frustrated when someone else gets more playing time. Obviously, up to a point, that frustration can be a positive motivator to work harder, do better.

But walking off the field during practice cannot be tolerated, nor can disrespecting a coach, not so much for arguing with him...I suspect that happens with some frequency...but for acting negatively when a discussion is over. It is one of those situations when the coach, ultimately, is always right.

Those above who have observed that it is a "team" thing hit the topic right on the head. This is one of life's lessons, unless you own a company. (Probably is even then, sooner or later :) ) This is a perfect opportunity for one or more of the captains to "make their bones" as leaders. Sit down with him. Help him get his head on straight...he has to learn that his time will come sooner or later if he is good enough. Even if it means rotating for some period with someone as good or better, or even struggling to prove oneself better.

I suspect this has already occurred. Perhaps Tress, knowing him presumably, has intervened to focus the young fellow's thinking. You would hate to get a young talent in a mood to transfer, but you must have thinking from all that the team comes first. We all hope this has occurred, and that we will see him doing well in the future. As in so many cases, time will tell.

Go Bucks!

Some comments from Heacock about Gibson.

Another player who is kind of re-entering the defensive mix is redshirt freshman defensive player Thaddeus Gibson. Gibson saw extensive playing time early in the season but did not make the trip to Purdue. No reason was officially given for his omission from the travel team, but it was widely rumored that Gibson left the practice field when he learned that the defensive game plan for that game did not include a large role for him. According to Heacock, Gibson's problems have been ironed out and Gibson is making impressive strides.

"He's real high on my list. I like Thaddeus," said Heacock.

"I think he had to straighten out a couple of things and he did. He's been working real hard every since.

"He's been good at practice. I think he's an outstanding potential football player.

"We moved him from linebacker to the Leo position defensive end spot. He's doing well, he had a great practice today.

"He can bring something to the table. I think as we go through these last four games you'll probably see him a little more," Heacock said.

Cont'd ...
