DE Joey Bosa (Def ROY, 3x Pro Bowl, Los Angeles Chargers)

Joey would obviously be taking quite a risk by sitting out this year. The same could be said of the Chargers, however. Giving up your first round pick for the 2016 draft is quite a blow for a team that is attempting to rebuild from a 4-12 season. Not to mention the effect that it will have on future draft picks. If I am a guy that is being considered as a top 3 pick and I know that San Diego is going to make me sign a contract that includes language that no other top 3 pick has been required to have in their contract since the 2011 CBA, I am going to put it out there before the draft that San Diego would be wasting a pick if they picked me. What kind of leverage do you have as the Chargers if you are trying to trade your pick and all of the top picks have essentially said that they will not play for you?

No doubt both sides are taking huge risks but Bosa will eventually get paid. The Chargers, on the other hand, are going to face consequences in future drafts and with free agents. Nothing they can do now to repair that damage.

As badly as the Chargers are handling this, Bosa will ultimately agree to their terms or else suffer a tremendous financial loss. Too bad in some ways, but it's hard to feel too sorry for a multimillionaire.

Sometimes it's not about the money. Does he want to sign that contract and be locked into all that petty bullshit, stuck in a terrible situation with the worst owner in the NFL for the next 4/5 years, potentially 6 and 7 if he gets tagged?

Fuck the Chargers and fuck Spanos, I say. Hold firm Joey.

By and large sd is simply trying to win in the court of public opinion because they want a new stadium. Around the NFL everyone knows they are in the wrong, and they will have to deal with that fallout for a long time. So, even if they win, they will still lose.

Add in the fact that this is also a way that teams are trying to cover their ass. Chris Landry was on the radio last night and said that what the team, in theory, at least, is doing by deferring money is that if Bosa (or any player) is cut and signs with another team, then that team is responsible for whatever guaranteed bonus money hasn't been paid yet. In essence, trying to protect against a draft bust by not paying all the money up front. But, as he then pointed out, no team is going to give up on a #3 pick within at least 3 years, so it is entirely pointless because the money will all be paid out by then anyway. So, SD looks stubborn AND stupid.

And there's the problem here - guaranteed bonus money should be guaranteed. The Chargers are a billion-dollar franchise that is literally hardballing a rookie over his "insurance policy" in case he busts his knee. Petty and utterly classless.

Disappointingly... I suspect Bosa may give in... with total intent on not staying after this contract... however, that'd be really tough to play for an org you dislike...

Wonder if they'd get offers from around the league... but again, the SD fans would go beserk... they finally have a pass rusher and to let him go because you can't sign him

My favorite part of this is Antonio Gates bitching that bosa needs to just sign a deal. The same Antonio Gates that was suspended and lost a game check for his holdout with the chargers because they were low balling him on an extension.

Gates might be a bit high and mighty in that regard but I'm sure he'll tell you it's because he's been a proven and loyal franchise commodity.

The NFLPA is the weakest union in sports.

They were able to get rid of two-a-days.

Trade deadline already passed.

The view from the San Diego barca-loungers:

View Poll Results: Who do you blame for Bosa not being signed yet?
Chargers 50 24.15%
Joey Bosa 52 25.12%
Bosa's Agents/Family 90 43.48%
Bacon 15 7.25%

http://forums.chargers.com/showthread.php?t=105085

SD "fans" have updated the poll to place most of the blame on the Bosas:

View Poll Results: At this point, who/what is responsible for Joey's holdout?
Joey Bosa 64 62.14%
CAA 12 11.65%
Joey's family 10 9.71%
Dean Spanos 11 10.68%
Ed McGuire 2 1.94%
BHC 0 0%
The Easter Bunny 1 0.97%
Santa Claus 0 0%
The KGB Chicken 1 0.97%
Training Camp Menu 2 1.94%

The NFLPA is the weakest union in sports.

Surprised players are weighing in against Bosa. Thought it was taboo for players to talk about another players money.

And there's the reason why the NFLPA is the weakest. The players have not stood by each other.

Interesting that SD wants a new playground. The Giants had to build their own stadium. The 49ers had some civic money, but Levi Strauss paid an enormous fee for naming rights, enough that the city made 3M in the first year. Who's going to pay for the Rams new place is interesting - St. Louis built them a stadium, but the team is leaving before the stadium is paid for, leaving the city with the debt and no team to pay it off.

THIS!!

Justin Gilbert is STILL on the Browns and he was the 8 pick. He's the worst top 10 pick I've ever seen and I'm a Browns fan so I've seen some bad ones. First round picks get a ton of rope before teams give up on them.
