I would like to see him back at LB next year where he should have been all along and I trust the new DC will put him back there. My opinion is that many bad decisions have been made on defense including overused nickel packages instead of sticking with a base defense. This also led to the loss of one major LB recruit that left the program that we could have used. We have plenty of depth at DE and hopefully more to come.
I have to disagree there. First, outside of Wisconsin, iowa and mich st, our schedule is loaded with teams that have pass heavy offenses. Matter of fact, the landscape of football in general (college and pro) has shifted to a more pass oriented system. There is more of a need for a good-great pass rush to disrupt that. Having another LB out there on defense is creating a huge mismatch for the offense. Imagine if OSU'S offense is facing a team with a base 4-3, and we 3 WRs and a TE, not to mention our RB, Braxton would be licking him chops looking at the mismatch created of having a LB have to stick either Heurman, spencer/Wilson in the slot or Hyde out of the backfield.
And if you look at the most successful seasons that urban has had while coaching, he has had a monstrous pass rush that doesn't let up, and it's facilitated from the DEs. All you need to do is look at his 2 NCs with UF. Marcus should bulk up 10-15 more pounds and get another move to get to the QB. He can be special if given time. We need all the help we can get along the line. 2 LBs is fine as long as their long and athletic and can tackle in space. Urbans defenses are led by pass rushing d line forcing turnovers to the DBS, and LBs stoping the run and having lateral speed to stop intermediate routes. The nickel is fine in today's landscape and we have the personnel to adjust to the 4-3 base if need be against the few run oriented teams we face. But using 4-3 against a team like Clemson, you're asking to be blown out
You are very very thin at LB. You have a kid who is a monster LB. He is very quick and can cover, probably not WR's but TE's and when playing zone he can do a lot of damage. You can blitz him. You can do so much with him. You slowly build a very strong base with a base 4-3. and then work from that. Sure you play nickel when you have to but only when you absolutely have to. With a very young defense, you need to keep it simple, build a base and expand. Sure you might give a play here and there but overall you build up confidence quicker. You try to do too much and you make mistake after mistake and there is no trust in anything. We'll see what happens next year.
Have you seen our LB's try and play pass defense outside of Shazier? It's been pretty friggin terrible all season long so your notion that we are over-playing the Nickel package (when teams can't run on us but pass with success to begin with) is pretty comical.
