DC Jim Knowles (Official Thread)

“We went through the process of trying to identify who would be the best fit for Ohio State. When you first look at it, somebody would say, ‘well, at Ohio State you can get anybody.’ Well we don’t want anybody, we want the right guy,” Day said. “And as you go through the different people throughout the country, I felt like Jim gave us the best situation moving forward to not only utilize the personnel that we’ve recruited to, but has a really good feel for what’s going on in college football right now.”

“As he says, he’s put in his 10,000 hours,” Day said of Knowles. “He’s really grinded his way through this profession, and now you can see what he did at Oklahoma State. I think his body of work speaks for itself. I know he’s excited to get to work here. Jan. 2, after the bowl game, was when he was kinda starting this thing, his new journey here at Ohio State. He’s very excited about it, and I’m very excited to get to work with him. I’m very fired up moving forward just about the fact that he’s gonna be the head coach of that defense.”

11W recruiting round up didn't sound real positive on the AJ Harris front.

Now, the Harris family has its answer. And the impact of Coombs reportedly leaving is significant.

“Big impact,” AJ’s father Daniel told Eleven Warriors of the effect Coombs’ departure will have on his son’s recruitment. “Haven’t heard from (newly hired defensive coordinator Jim Knowles) and he’s been on the job for over a week. We have no clue if he even likes defensive backs like AJ, because he never got an Oklahoma State offer even though he got an Oklahoma offer.”

Should Knowles decide to reach out to the Harris family, they would of course listen. But the call would be met with some skepticism.

“I look at you kinda sideways when you’ve been in the building for 10 days, the next class is your class and you haven’t reached out to someone who’s supposed to be a priority,” Daniel said.

Recruiting is part of it.......

Can you do that during the dead period?

There have been numerous updates from recruits Frye has contacted.
In fact I believe he is going to see Luke Montgomery this weekend.

My guess is Knowles as the DC isn’t expected to be a rain maker as a recruiter.
But contact should have been made, something along the lines of building a relationship once our staff fills out.
This isn’t Cornell or Duke.

He's been trying to connect with the guys already in the fold. I'm sure that along with moving to Ohio and getting settled in he has also had a part in interviewing people to fill the Defensive staff. Maybe the plan was to wait a few days until the Defensive staff is in place so he / they can use that as a selling point.
Regardless, now that everything is set its time to reach out to recruits. Would not be surprised if Walton is already on the phone with Harris.

To answer my own question, I was told it’s ok for coaches to contact players during the dead period you just can’t have them on campus. If that’s the case, and it seems to be since apparently Frye has been in contact with several today, then it may be they’re just waiting to get the entire staff in place, don’t know. At any rate I think the dead period ends tomorrow so I guess that point will be moot anyhow.
