DC Jim Knowles (Official Thread)

Does anyone remember the dumpster fire our D was 2 years ago? Knowles took that to a top 20 and then top 3 defense. He complelty overhauled his philosophy this year to adapt to his players and the results last year. My only major criticism is our lack of rotation, which cost us dearly Friday. We were obvioulsy wore down in the second half.
That is why I am not in the camp wanting to fire Knowles. But I count him as on the hot seat because of the consistency...consistency to flounder in games that actually matter. The defense was more vanilla than against Minny and Purdue somehow. We played scared on defense and it just doesn't make sense to me. We needed a hell of a lot more aggression than what we rolled out and it cost us the game.

I'm sure whatever bowl we end up in, the defense will look great and re-inspire confidence in Knowles. But until he can fucking beat *ichigan and crack whatever code he is missing, I am not giving him any benefit of the doubt.

this. im not saying fire him just yet but if the vanilla stays constant then what are we doing?

He has to get the greenlight next year to just play the defense we played against ND, Wisconsin, etc. If we do that I really don't see us giving up any points in the second half, or at least enough to lose.

I feel like he was pretty vanilla in those games too.

The LBs were subpar blitzers this year. They need to figure out how to be more aggressive, but I want Knowles and the secondary coaches here as long as they can keep them.

Wisconsin couldn’t run once their #1 back went down. ND’s big back gave the Bucks problems throughout the game. Against all games against top twenty teams, the linebackers, Sawyer and timaloualau seemed to to be pretty ordinary.

Holy shite! This guy walked in and turned around a 100+ ranked defense, taking it to the top 2 or 3 in the country in just two years. I say look elsewhere in the coaching staff. First and foremost, special teams is a complete dog's breakfast across the board. Second, the Buckeye defense was digging themselves out of dung 5 miles high in almost every game, thanks to the offense and special teams. Perhaps one thing underpinning all of this is something seriously wrong with the Buckeyes S&C. Perhaps it is the turf also contributes to so many leg issues, but I suspect it is far more likely the S&C program, from what I read here and in former player statements. For sure, they need to focus on flexibility.

Another issues lays squarely in Day's lap, he needs to be a head coach. He should not be acting as an OC or quarterbacks coach. I get that he has skills, but he needs to step back and get an overall managerial perspective, which he could not possibly have given the many hats he wears. He completely effed up the quarterback situation this year and should have made a decision before the first game. Having learned nothing from Tate Martell, he brings Brown in as a special tool in short yardage situations. It might have given him a playing opportunity, but it got him injured and did nothing to build Kyle McCord's confidence in those situations.

I am quite certain that there is a lot of introspection going on right now and it will no doubt include Jim Knowles. That said, I have been among the most enthusiastic supporters of a head coach that now needs to extract his head from his arse to get himself and his team unf#(ked and focused on winning, especially in late November next year.

He was. I supported it when I thought it was to not show our hand to Tcun. But once we called the same defensive scheme in that game, then some serious questions come up. I think Knowles and Walton are overall very good and should be retained, On offense, nobody beyond Hartline and Alford are beyond reproach. Bailey did well at TE but Dennis, Day and especially Frye should be reviewed. But this is Knowles' thread, he gets another year and hopefully works out, I like him and think what he is doing can work...just needs to make it work in the big moments.

The most depressing part of all the obvious reviewing that should be done is that the guy doing it just gave Day a big thumbs up/excellent performance review and a raise.

Nothing is going to happen until we get a new AD.

A checked out AD that was never really good in the first place is a problem. One that hopefully is addressed now that tenure is gone. Gene has given Day and Holtmann a big thumbs up on their report cards and it isn't helping. The "Well we are doing pretty good" schtick is worn out. I hope we get an AD with a backbone.

But as to Knowles, he has improved the defense a lot and owns up to shortcomings, so I like the guy for at least one more year. But lump him in with Day on this point, he has to figure it out against *ichigan or he is gone. To me, there is literally only one goal next year....beat Tcun or go packing.

Ohio State DC Jim Knowles Named Candidate For Head Coaching Job
  • After Mike Elko’s departure, Duke is in search of a new head coach, with Jim Knowles potentially considered as a candidate due to his successful tenure as Duke’s defensive coordinator from 2010 to 2017.
  • Knowles, currently the defensive coordinator for Ohio State, had an impressive season leading the Buckeyes’ defense in passing defense and points allowed per game.
  • Other potential candidates for Duke’s head coaching position include Curt Cignetti, Willie Fritz, and Jason Garrett, along with offensive coordinators from different college teams. Interim head coach Trooper Taylor will lead Duke in their upcoming bowl game.

I'll say it, fire Knowles, the D is always porous as fuck in these big games, and my god how long has it been since we have had a decent pass rush ? The amount of talent at DLine and LB should mean we get to the QB much more than we're doing. Knowles is not good enough for the Bucks, give me some stingy defenses, that classy 4-3 instead of this scheme which we clearly can't run at a good enough level in primetime situations.
Yeah top 3 defense is just awful. Fire Knowles… what a freaking joke.

Want to point fingers? Point it at the offense who finished in the 30s.

The defense bailed our mid offense out vs teams like ND/Penn State/ Wisconsin/TCUN.
